Weird Republican haircuts

This ad has been airing for a Repuke running for State Senate and everytime it airs it creeps me out. I've seen hairstyles like this in my Mom's old photo albums from the 50's or 60's but this is 2003 (I think, somedays I'm not so sure anymore).

A friend of mine and I used to discuss (not at great length) about the generic christian club cut. That one sort of looks like this one (especially the woman).
OT: Does the phrase "Christian Womanhood Spectacular" (A Pastor Jack Hyles reference) resonate with anyone? I'd love to discuss!
Personally, I love the helmet-jelly roll. That's the one where the long side part rolls over like a burrito and is plastered in place with hair spray. Of course there's the exquistly unique Benny Hinn cut! What's up with that–a comb-over gone bad???

Is one of those where the candidate is in the downtown area speaking to "citizens" but they had to be friends, family or volunteers since everybody in the ad is white and the city's population is 30% black. You would think there would be a few minorities in the ad somewhere but nope. When I go downtown, which is often, I see people of all ages and races.

Who is that? What city (I'm assuming NC here). I know some people in local NC govt. throughout the state (on both sides), not in cities bigger than Chapel Hill, though.

The guy is Brandon Bell he was a state Senator a few years ago but was defeated for re-election. Nows he's running to fill a retiring Republican's seat. The stupid thing about that commercial the place it takes place in isn't even in the district he's running for.
