I will be boycotting the World Series this year

America has no World Series in 2003.

Why would I want to waste my time see two teams that most Americans have no interest in? For the Yankees, the same old boring players, again playing in October, as if it's their birthright, and having to listen to their spoiled, overindulged fans. For the Marlins, it's just an expansion team that cannot appreciate the value of a World Series championship team: they would only firesell their players away if they were to win. That's not how you defend a world championship. Instead, I plan on ignoring the World Series entirely, so as to spare myself the aggravation of seeing two teams I either dislike, or find repetitive and boring. I suspect many Americans agree. I will root for a quick outcome, so we can return to Fox programming. During next week's games I will instead be watching rented video tapes of old World Series's, past baseball highlights (maybe the Ken Burns "Baseball" series). I ask all of you who have no interest in this series to join me.

I would not be that bitter. Hell, the Yankees may be winning now; but that doesn't mean that they are going to be winning ten years from now.

All teams go in cycles. I am sure that there have been times when the Yankees fielded pathetic teams. And I am sure that they will field pathetic teams in the future again.

But I was never a fan of baseball. I've always loved football. But my favorite team, the Washington Redskins, has seen better days.

back in '99. However, I'm not saying that Cleveland deserved to win that one. The Marlins clearly were the better team.

I think my feelins stem from the fact that there's simply no kind of appreciation in Florida for winning a World Series. At least not to the same depth that exists in long-time traditional MLB cities. For MLB cities like Cleveland, as well as Chicago and Boston, Baseball has long been an integral part of the civic culture.

When Cleveland peaked in the mid to late '90s, everyone knew the team and its players. To many Indians fans, they were almost like family. Had the Indians won Game 7 in the 1999 World Series, we probably would have had a month-long celebration.

Did Florida really care about winning that World Series? What happened to the 1999 champion Florida Marlins? The owner broke up that team before the following season!

I know the pain of Cubs fans as well as those of the Red Sox. You guys feel the pain of losing to a much greater depth than the Marlins fans will ever sense the joy of victory.

I have my teams and when they're on I watch. This year though I got REALLY turned on at the idea of a Cubs/Sox final. No blame to the Marlins here they deserve to be where they are. I was so excited this year at the strong probability that at least one long absent, historically meaningful team would make it to Series. But I feel so let down and disinterested right now. It's caring about the ballplayers that you've watched all season long and not caring so much about ballplayers you haven't invested your time in. And the goddamned Marlins-don't even get me started. They played against Cleveland in the 1997 World Series (I live near Cleveland), and won in the last moments of the seventh game after only being a team for four or five years, whereas the Indians had been waiting for something like this for over fifty years. Then the team's owner showed his true colors and trashed the team, not giving a damn that they'd just won the crown of baseball.

BTW, I LOVED it when the Arizona Diamondbacks actually won the Series against the Stankee Yankees! Everyone was making fun of them, taking it for granted that the mighty Yanks would crush them within a few games, and acting like it was, indeed, their birthright. I HATE THE FUCKING YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!1

this year as there was during the "Subway Series" a few years ago, when the Yanks and the Mets went against each other, no one outside of New York gave a shit. If I remember right, that was one of the lowest-rated Series ever.
