MLB sucks
Until they get a salary cap it will never be competitive.

Wow, who can spend the most money on a team?

Great fucking sport.

1. It really fucking sucks.
ESPECIALLY when you have ONE dominant team. It's not even like an oligarchal competitive system where you have an elite "brass", i.e. the NFL in the 70's and 80's.

As long as the Bankees dominate and control everything and make twice as much as the 5th richest team, I'm not gonna support the MLB.

3. I don't support it
It was fun to cheer the Cubs while they made an appearance, but that's as far as my interest goes. MLB is pure excrement.

My message to MLB management:

Dear Boneheads,

Sports are supposed to be COMPETITIVE you dumbasses. This shit on TV is NOT COMPETITIVE. Get a salary cap, cause MLB is a JOKE.

Yours Truly,

NFL Fan.

5. Exactly. The NFL way is the way to go.
I'm actually getting used to the parity in the NFL. I'm starting to like it. It gives my Vikings more of a chance every year to win the Super Bowl.;-)

The Ivy League pays more for their teachers than Junior Colleges. Excellence cost money.
But my larger point is that we've seen some great great baseball over the last few weeks.
And if you haven't appreciated how special it's been well, you're right, you shouldn't bother watching the games.

32. Most Yankee wins pre free agency.
This post season has been great, good games, great pitching and lots of comebacks. Sorry to see any of the teams go home, Boston played good enough to win, as did the Cub, Oakland... The money does color the game, but forget it and enjoy. The reason I like the game, or any for that mater is that it is something to care about that doesn't really matter. After all, it's a game. and a game that we don't even play.

that on average, the richer teams win more games than the poorer teams. Do you really think that just because there isn't a direct one-to-one correlation of richest teams = best record, that money isn't a factor?

Please.

26. You know, it must suck
to be such a pathetically bad sport. The Yankees won, showing tremendous character and resiliency. There are team owners who are MUCH richer than Steinbrenner. He just cares about winning more than they do and the players know it. In addition to having some of the most talented players (it could easily be argued that the three best players on the field talent-wise were red Sox (Pedro, Nomar, Manny)) the Yankees, in the Torre/Cashman era have had tremendous character guys. It showed tonight.

But that's essentially what I was saying. Look at the Mets. one of the highest payrolls in the game. Where did they finish?

At the end of the day, the Yankees weren't swinging at Pedro's fastballs with their wallets. What a game!!!

One of the best series I've ever witnessed.

The outcome is not what I would have liked, but I cannot share your sentiment.

If it's any consolation, very few will care to watch the Yankees/Marlins. Lowest television ratings ever, methinks.

23. How's Fox gonna market it?
"Yes, fans... come see the Yankee dynasty grab another one."

Besides the Marlins pitching being highly suspect, their overall youth will be their undoing. Getting to the Series was their season.

Yankees in 5.

Fox doesn't need to do a lot of marketing. I don't think the World Series will live up to the LCS's but, then, how could it? I can't wait.

30. I don't worry about ratings
Ratings aren't the only way to measure the merit of a series. If the Marlins beat the Yankees in Game 1, I think the ratings will be allright.

The Marlins have proven already that they could beat the FOX darling, the Chicago Cubs. Even FOX has to give Florida some props now.

22. Give it a rest.
If you don't like baseball, fine. The NFL has its own problems. The game is getting to be quite boring, especially with the constant increase in TV time outs extending games toward four hours on a regular basis.

Just chill. If you like football, fine. I'll take this year's MLB playoffs over anything the NFL has offered in its history.

25. Amen to that
neither the NFL nor the NBA can match anything MLB offers in terms of excitement. Baseball is the best game, but the league management does its best to fuck it up.

36. Yes in baseball
is it more exciting to watch the grass grow, seeing 15 pitches thrown to a single batter, watching a pop fly? NFL Games are 3 hours, I wake up at 10 am watch a football game, it is over by one.

but I take nothing away from the yanks or the marlins. Baseball has never had a salary cap, and no amount of bitching from you is going to change that. You talk a good game, but let's look at the facts about what the salary cap has done for the NFL.

1. Due to the rise in free agency moves since the NFL introduced a cap, you need a Ph.D.. in economics and a shit-load of time on your hands to figure out who plays for who anymore.

2. There are no more dynasties. Some people don't like them, but the truth is they're good for sports. People like watching the greats. The Cowboys from the early to mid nineties were the last dynasty and there will be no more. Whether we admit it or not, that's a big loss for the NFL. No more 70's steelers, or 80's 49ers or 90's Cowboys. we like underdogs, but there's something about the greatness of a dynasty that's appealing to a lot of people.

3. A lot of teams will end up with one top notch player, and a team full of losers. Case in point Green Bay. Farve eats up salary so the rest of the team suffers. He keeps them competitive, but everybody knows they can't go to the big game if they can't get some more players under the cap

I agree a cap works wonders for competition, but pretending that it's a cure-all for all the problems in sports is naive. Sounds like sour grapes from a small market fan to me.

34. Yeah, the Texas Rangers
are really getting their money's worth, right? They had baseball's 5th highest payroll. The Mets and Dodgers were numbers 2 & 3 respectively. How did they do? Did they do better than the Marlins, with baseball's 26th highest payroll? Or Minnesota with the 18th? Detroit's payroll was higher than Florida's and more than double that of Tampa Bay (A-Rod made more than the whole TB team). Did that stop them from being one of the worst teams of all time?

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/diamondbacks/2003mlbpayroll.html

Did Oakland lose to Boston because they had a much smaller payroll or was it because they acted as if they were allergic to home plate during their last 3 games?

Real baseball fans know the answers to these questions.

38. Baseball only sucks during the regular season
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 04:30 AM by AwsieDooger
Even if I've always detested the sport, I concede the playoffs are dramatic theatre and extremely high quality of play, one of the best periods of the sporting year.

No bum pitchers. No lazy, 50% effort against an overmatched opponent. No overemphasis on stats, absolutely pathetic in a supposed team sport. If the regular season were 100 games or so, it might threaten a decent % of postseason caliber. Since that will never happen, my attention span and viewing interest will be limited to October, always in puzzled disbelief how the hitless wonder Braves ever managed more than 50 wins. Those groundout kings merit a handicap: man on first to start every postseason at bat.
