Why is/was sex considered so bad for sooo long
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 03:17 PM by HEyHEY
Why would something so natural be considered dirty, and wrong, and bad?

Just to make it more fun?

3. well maybe underneath
But I don't know if I buy that a bunch of guys got together and said, "Hey I know how we can dominate women!"

It was considered dirty for men too.

I'm wondering if it started out as "There are too many damned kids to feed"

Was there ever a time when sex wasn't dirty?

5. but why?
Just to get more themselves..or does it go right back to the bible? even then I just can't understand why something everyone wants and is naturally programmed to want, could have ever become taboo.

Why isn't it bad to want money, or food?

7. I would hope not
Sex that isn't dirty just isn't fun! Ask yourself, do you want sex, or do you want dirty sex?

Yes, I know I've contributed absolutely nothing to this discussion.

12. lemme see
in one corner you have "sex is bad" and in another corner you have "There are too many damned kids to feed", and in another one you have "masturbation is evil". People were expected to have no outlet.
I see why a lot of people, in the back of their minds, despise the BIG THREE(Christianity, Judaism and Islam).

18. Actually
I think it's men in power who harbor desires to be sexually dominated by women. I think it's powerless men who want to dominate women.

16. That was my thought too. But how?
That's the first thing I thought of, but I can't mentally connect the dots. True, it's far more shameful for a woman and the consequences have been historically grossly imbalanced, but the shame and sin of sex has always applied to men too. I'm guessing it has something to do with women being considered property for so long, but again I'm having trouble with the precise logic.

17. It's called pregnancy.
And then there used to be sexually transmitted diseases and stuff. People used to die from Syphillis. Al Capone did. Not sure if anybody ever died from clap. This little thing called the pill changed all that, or at least most of it. Penicillin helped a lot with the rest. See, there used to be a lot more of these things called consequences that went along with sex. Now all you have to worry about is aids. Ain't progress grand?

19. Disease, unwanted pregnancies, and paternity issues
Promiscuity really does increase the spread of sexually transmitted disease which can be debilitating if they are not cured. Before birth control, pregnancy was always possible with sex and sometimes a woman did not have an adequate support system or resources for raising the child. Another issue is paternity. Men want to know that the child that they are raising is theirs. All these issues discourage promiscuity and frequent sexual encounters. I don't see the logic in having masterbation being evil or dirty. Perhaps people just associated it with sex.

21. Control issues
In patriarchal societies, men wanted to be sure that any children born to their wives would be really theirs, so they tried all sorts of means like seclusion, veiling, genital mutilation, and the death penalty for adultery to make sure that their wives didn't stray.

But sex wasn't really considered dirty for men, just for women. That's where the whole issue of prostitution comes in. The cultures that value female chastity usually have a thriving subculture of prostitution, sometimes very glamorized, as in Edo Japan or ancient Greece. The Victorians, for all their supposed prudery, had a lot of prostitution.

As for masturbation, part of the obsession with that stems from Victorian times, when it was believed that males had only a limited number of sperm, and that if they masturbated before marriage, they wouldn't have enough left over to father children.

Earlier cultures, back when human populations were small and fragile, probably objected to any kind of sex that didn't lead to pregnancy, since they felt a need to keep their numbers up.

22. Pregnancy has not always been so easily preventable
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 09:03 PM by JVS
thus a Taboo was helpful in trying to minimize unwanted pregnancy. STD's have helped to serve as a more modern reason to curb sexual appetites.
