2 Questions: 1)Are you superstitious? 2)Do you believe in ghosts?
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 07:13 PM by populistmom
Regarding question 1:
I'm not superstitious, but this morning, I broke a mirror. Not only did I break a mirror, but I accidentally knocked it off a shelf and into the toilet (thank godness I had some rubber gloves around) so I had to pick up the shattered pieces from the toilet.

I tend to think, "no big deal, but I wish I hadn't broken my mirror", but husband gets all worried, negative, and freaked out which boggles my mind. He thinks it's some kind of terrible omen, but because I don't believe it, he'll get the bad luck. (WTF?) Anyway, how many adults here are superstitious? Is it a lot or is it just a problem with baseball fans.

Regarding question 2:
Now, my father in law (who was a real honery old fart) died almost 4 years ago and since then, just little weird things happen sometimes. Last night, at a very unusual moment (that I can't really explain because its too personal), all of the sudden the VCR starts rewinding by itself. It was just too strange to have happened when it did. I was freaked for a second, but I don't take it too seriously. All I could think to say was , "Bernie stop bothering me."
So, who believes in ghosts?

Sarah

I got a story on ghosts.
Me, my brother, and a good friend sneaked outside one night and started walking around town, so we went past the high school which me and my buddy attend and theres a cemetery all of places across the street,(stupid I know), so we are walking past it and I swear I see something, like you know the grim reaper image like I cant explain it, but I saw jeans, it was totally bizzare I must say now my friend claims he saw it but my brother calls me a bullshitter. Maybe I saw something maybe I didnt. I think I was a freshman when this happened, hmmmmmmm lets see that would had made it before Donny's sad death, well Donny was this guy I knew not a friend but we got along, and the next summer poor Donny died in an accident. I was an aquaintance more so. Another thing on ghosts, I feel there is another kind of ghost, the ghost of the past that hovers over us and watches, you dont encounter these but you think about them.

17. I am not superstitious, either...but have had several
experiances with things that would be impossible to explain (with AND without exotic substances!).

By the way, nice pick of Dennis Kucinich. Would love to see him and Howard Dean on the same ticket.

3. No, I'm not superstitious, but I do believe in ghosts.
I have seen the ghost of my great grandfather. My mother and father saw it too, at the same time. We also had one living in our house who would stomp around upstairs while we were eating dinner and lock my stepmother in the basement. I was also at my old place of work once, and I watched my cup slide slowly across my desk. There were other strange instances that happened there, like the uncanny feeling that there was someone looking over my shoulder.

I can relate to the over the shoulder thing. Used to happen to me all the time, to this day I can't stand it when people stand behind me.

Also, many people from the islands have had direct experience with seeing spirits.

6. I'm not superstitious
And I've never seen a ghost. Doesn't mean there are no ghosts, just I've never seen one. I know folks who do believe, though, which is why I don't just blow that kind of talk off.

Rationally I am not superstitious, nor do I believe in ghosts, HOWEVER, I think there's a lot out there that remains hidden to most of us.

10. Yes
I have my own superstitions that are different from what normally thinks of when they think of superstitions. I believe that it is bad luck to kill anything, including insects unless it is a mosquito biting me. I tend to believe that if I do anything malicious, bad things will happen to me.
As far as ghosts, I haven't actually experienced them, but I know people who have. I don't know if I want to experience one. It would be a cool experience and I would feel that I had a definite answer. On the otherhand, it would scare me pretty badly. I think that they probably do exist.

My daughter (12) feels she is tuned into these things, though, and she will tell us if a house is haunted. She says she can communicate with trees, which can get a little creepy.

14. Well, since the physicists say
that their calculations describing the universe work better when they assume 10 dimensions (instead of the usual 4), I would tend to believe that there is a lot going on that we can't normally perceive. Perhaps ghosts are part of this, and superstitions too...bear with me here...

We understand our world to work on a cause and effect basis. But if there are additional dimensions, the relationship between the causes and effects may be somewhat undetectable at this time. Breaking a mirror may effect something in the 7th dimension that we don't understand yet, but we later see the ripple effect back in our 4 dimensions.

Imagine if you will, a 2 dimensional world, like the surface of puddle. As the sun moves across the sky, it causes the shadow of a tree to move across the puddle. Puddle Man has no awareness of the sun or the tree, but he can feel and see the shadow, and he knows that the shadow brings cooler temperatures. He would struggle to find a "cause" for the shadow, and would probably start a religion to try to explain it!

23. Stop it, you guys are scaring me...Everyone is asleep at
my house, and I am all alone in the basement....wait, what's that noise? Did you hear it???:-)

I am superstitious in the knock wood, don't open the umbrella in the house sort of way, at the same time owning a black cat.

Ghosts? I don't know. I don't know if it's my active imagination, but sometimes-only in the early morning after my husband goes to work- I feel as if my Father in law (who died in 2000) is sitting across the table from me. Never saw anything "ghostly" though.

Did I ever consider that it was a dead entity who didnt enjoy Baseball tonight...of course not. The Tv is run on electricity, anything could happen at anytime.

25. What I find interesting about these comments...
is how many folks reply with a "No, but ..." statement: "No, I am not superstitious except for this one thing about ghosts." To me it parallels what one often hears from women: "No, I'm not a feminist, but (insert feminist principle here)."

As you might have guessed, no and no, by the way.

hehe!
But then if a fairy did it you really can't blame a ghost. that would be rude!

just because I can't explain it does not mean the explaination does not exist. Burden of proof's on you that the ghost did it.

30. No, but not entirely no, and yes, but not entirely yes
Superstitious? Nope, not me. Though I do tend to have little keepsakes and the like that mean a lot to me and that I carry for good vibes, luck, or whatever you want to call it. Touchstones, really. I sometimes also choose some dates or numbers - or whatever - based on events related to those same dates, numbers, or whatever, but not obsessively (like if I'm applying for a job and can date my letter to match the birthday of someone I care about, cool). If that's superstition, then I'm guilty as charged to some extent. Not into any negative superstitions, though.

Ghosts? Well, I've seen (once) and felt (a few times) things that I cannot explain - getting chills thinking about the most recent. if not ghosts, some kind of metaphysical presence or emanation that gives me the willies (no phallic reference intended for the Brits among us). I've experienced other psychic phenomena, some perhaps explicable on other terms and some not, and the concept of ghosts is not something I'd dismiss. My grandmother, who seemed to be tuned in to psychic/intuitive things rather nicely, had some great stories about her ghostly experiences.

Your father-in-law sounds like he couldn't give up that last bastion of male power, the remote control. If I were a ghost, I'd probably do the same thing. Actually, I'd become the Ultimate Peeping Tom, I'm sure, but I'd never admit that...don't tell anyone, please. :-)

33. No, and Yes.
I'm of the belief, which is not disproven by science, that ghosts are simply manifestations of a different level of reality that we, being alive, have no real knowledge of. Yet.

I'm not one of those who believe in a literal Heaven-type place, nor do I believe that when we die that's it. I believe, and have seen a lot of research on the idea, that a person's energy (soul, whatever you wish to call it) tranfers to another plane of conciousness on death. Hence my strong feeling that psychadelics are an important learning tool, and the outlawing of such to actually be a crime against humanity.

But maybe that's just me. :)

see, i don't believe that breaking a mirror will bring about bad luck. but i know that if i were to break a mirror, i would think about the whole "bad luck" thing and may subconciously do things that would lead me to believe that the stories are true...

and on the ghost issue... i've seen/heard/felt/smell too many things to deny their existence. I've just been fortunate enough to have very pleasant spirits around :)

I don't care about mirrors, black cats etc. but I have clothes and items that I consider lucky for me and other things that are unlucky. As far as ghosts go....a BIG ole YES, I have had some personal creepy experiences that I know were visitations.

40. Wow, can't believe all the responses I got
MGKrebs was espesically interesting. The more I thought about things, the more I wonder if it was my own energy in a sense. I don't know. I mean, like with superstitions, I think that's the biggest part to those, a self-fullfilling prophecy type of thing, but the other "ghost" stuff I don't know. I guess I try to be wise enough to admit I don't fully understand everything in the universe enough to say for sure what it could be, whether it's deceased relatives, other dimensions, my own energies causing something to happen, or just a freaky coincidence. It's interesting to see, however, all the different thoughts on the subject.
