There's a new action-adventure hero on tap, and his name is Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey). His first adventure is based on a Clive Cussler novel, which gives it more than usual respectability right out of the box. It's put together well, and it's fun to watch and be a part of.
Dirk is the new Indiana Jones, but gentler, and with less superhero pretension. His two sidekicks (Carl and Rudi) provide a comic relief that doesn't seem out of place-- they both enhance the flow of the flick without being overly artificial. And the feisty dame, accidental companion Dr. Eva Rojas, is as intelligent and brave as she is beautiful.
There is lots of shoot-em-up violence, and the bad guy that chases them throughout the movie (General Massarde) takes an increasingly direct role throughout the romp. The movie starts with a Civil War battle scene setting the stage for the modern day story, and the cannon fire is as realistic as can be hoped for.
The ending is, naturally, predictable, and it does everything but reach out and slap you across the face with SEQUEL SETUP. No doubt there will be at least one or two more, and indeed it would make a pleasant TV series (but please, God, no cartoons!).
Go. Sit back. Enjoy the fireworks. It's worth the money and the time.
