1. Stone Roses 1st Album
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 08:40 PM by Crisco
I and several of my co-workers used to semi-regularly (like 3-4 times a year) take blotter and somehow that album always wound up in the CD player at some point, without fail.

Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted or Radiohead's Ok, Computer are excellent.

One of my favorites is Camper Van Beethoven. Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart is a fine one to listen to.

And someone mentioned Townes Van Zandt.

83. Me... Cranking to Mr. Oldfield at the moment....
Totally encompassing music. A clip:

http://entertainment.msn.com/radio/launchradio.aspx?url=%2falbum%2fDefault.aspx%3falbum%3d101291&rcd=slalb1&type=album&id=101291

The then-newly-formed Virgin Records allowed Oldfield a year to complete this 49-minute conceptual effort, which required him to record eighty tracks of himself playing 28 different instruments. Tubular Bells achieved Top Ten chart success in the US when it was used in the soundtrack for the film The Exorcist, selling over 10 million copies. ~ Scott Bultman

55. 1st show - Boston '72.
Dropped something at BC and had the strangest subway ride of my life.
NRPS started at 6;30 and the show ended after 1:00. Had to walk back to BC (lost contact with my friends). I kept asking directions and promptly forgot 'em 30 seconds later....I think I made it back around 9:00 the next morning.

2 days later I saw the Dead and NRPS again in a small auditorium at Clark Univestity.....I was reasonably straight for that show....it was outstanding!

I've listened to the show on wncw

Something about the Skull and Roses album, technically, I think it's the cleanest "live" sound of anything I've heard from the Dead (or any other band). I am amazed that 32 years later, I've yet to hear a live album that delivers the goods like that album. NFA~GDTHFB is maybe the finest rock and roll tune ever recorded, IMHO.

61. the PITB>Lovelight>GDTRFB off 100 Years Hall is sweet too.
and there was nothing like the feeling of the initial impact of recognizing a couple of notes coming out of a jam that you knew would lead into GDTRFB, albeit, 5 minutes before it happened.

all i can think of when that happened was where in lawrence of arabia you see omar sheriff slowing appearing from the nothingness of the desert.

i just wished i could have seen the boys in front of the pyrimids.. those were shows for the ages.

66. There was a Rolling Stone article about the Pyramid gig.
IIRC, there was a side story that Lesh and Garcia set up inside one of the burial rooms(?)for checking out the acoustics/harmonics...they were jamming and Phil hit a note that sync'd to the Pyramid's resonant frequency....it was pretty intense.

I think I read that in RS, anway....

Yeah, seeing them play "Blues for Allah" would have done it for me, too.

74. Live Dead was my first favorite for that sort of thing
and it was at Dead shows (lots of them) that I came to realize that dancing should be an integral part of the experience.
Moved away from listening to their albums in favor of live tapes.
Now they're releasing a lot of those old shows, on CD.
You can also get CDs of all the shows on this year's summer tour.
I went to the Red Rocks shows and those were really fine! I know
it's not the same without Jerry, but the old magic is still there.

Of the stuff in the poll, Tangerine Dream was the clear winner.

Best of the 90's: Shpongle: Are You Shpongled
(also look for Hallucinogen, Mystery of the Yeti, or anything else with Simon Posford).

Now it's all about psytrance.

23. Well, somebody had to do it
I was told about it by a neighbor, the weekend before AMC ran it. I taped it. Now, I'll put it on in the basement at parties. I'm surprised at how few people have heard about it.

As far as I'm concerned, it only works the first time through. But that "cha-ching!" when the door opens and the movie goes to color is really well-timed for a "coincedence".

There's another one, I think it's "echos" synched to the end sequence for 2001 that's OK, not as good as Dark Side of the Rainbow.

Now for the tough question. WHO was it that did this the first time? ;->

A bunch of us girls got up in front of the class and sang "I think I'm pregnant" to the tune of that. This was during the very experimental teaching years back in the late 60s early 70s.

Those were the good old days...we would have been escorted out in straightjackets if we pulled that shit now...too sad....

Actually "the 12 Dreams of Dr.Sardonicus" Spirit's masterwork . You listen to it with headphones, it's like being on psychedelics anyway. :)

But depending on the mood, it reminds me of the New Mexican Desert, Sierra Nevadas above June Lake or Mission Bay Beach after a storm.....

all excellent locales to be UI of mushrooms or peyote.

40. Agreed. It's even better to play loaded in a garage band
You can do anything you want with the title track. It's more performance art than music. We had a system where when the drummer got tired of what was happening, he'd start into a ten second fill, and we'd jump back into the chorus (the wordless chorus).

Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 11:35 PM by Rooktoven
I mean the Peter Sinfield Lytics lend themselves to that. But that incarnation (and all the other ones of KC, to be fair) was so incredibly musically versatile. It may be an atypical song, but it was played really well.

"The yellow jester does not play,
but gently pulls the strings,
He smiles as the puppets dance,
In the court of the Crimson King..."

Man I have lived through that court intrigue so often... Why is the Black queen chanting the funeral march?

77. Let me paint the picture...
Anywhere between 4 and 8 very stoned or drunk teenagers, of moderate to hefty musical talent, trying to navigate the somewhat free-form interludes in between the "core" sections (verses and the wordless chorus). There was no telling where the thing would go.

When your bass guitarist suddenly starts playing a bong while your drummer is playing beer bottles, along with a flute and keyboard, you've left what can clearly be defined as music.

Come to think of it, it sounded a lot like subsequent King Crimson albums.

Find some Rick Wakeman or Yes tunes, turn the TV on, the sound down, imbibe and enjoy!

There were several classically trained musicians in many of these groups wha could play more than three chords and actually think outside the box. It was, IMHO one of the greatest ages in music since Ludwig Van!

Raining.
flooding in parts of the city.
tripping.
Surfers on a tiny stage in the basment of a VFW hall.

Pure gold I tell you, pure gold.

50. It was only wine, but I drank the whole bottle then laid on the
couch and starting living the Doors. It got so intense I had to spend the rest of the evening in the bathroom. Sadly, I cannot listen to that album without getting a little queasy to this day.

69. What lyrics!

This is the end, Beautiful friend
This is the end, My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes...again
Can you picture what will be, So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land
Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane, All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold
The west is the best, The west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest
The blue bus is callin' us, The blue bus is callin' us
Driver, where you taken' us
The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door...and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...I want to...fuck you
C'mon baby, take a chance with us X3
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock, On a blue bus
Doin' a blue rock, C'mon, yeah
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill
This is the end, Beautiful friend
This is the end, My only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die
This is the end

86. Ya think?
D.O.A
Bloodrock
Bloodrock 2

Laying here looking at the ceiling
Someone lays a sheet across my chest
Something warm is flowing down my fingers
Pain is flowing all through my back

I try to move my arms and there's no feeling
And when I look I see there's nothing there
The face beside me stopped it totally bleeding
The girl I knew has such a distant stare

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Then I looked straight at the attendant
His face is pale as it can be
He bends and whispers something softly
He says there's no chance for me

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Life is flowing out my body
Pain is flowing out with my blood
The sheets are red and moist where I'm lying
God in Heaven, teach me how to die

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
