Just saw "Mystic River"
and it's wonderful to see an intelligent movie written for adults. All-around excellent. I read the book and it's very close. Plus, great to see liberals like Sean Penn and Tim Robbins with interesting roles.

1. My roommate wants to see that.
I'm not a big Clint Eastwood fan, though.

8. Whatever one may think of Eastwood
as an actor, or his personal politics, he is an excellent director. I've always been impressed by the movies he's directed.

2. Tim Robbins- gave one of the greatest speeches at the Press club
And for those of you in the NY area, Tim has written a play called embedded (as in embedded journalists) I think Broadway picked it up.

3. Thanks for the review
I love Dennis Lehane, love his mysteries with the same characters and loved Mystic River which was a total departure from the Angie/Patrick series. He's a fine writer and after I read my first Lehane I was hooked.
I'm glad the movie sticks to the book because it was a tight, suspensful story which had me guessing up to the end.
I'm going for Tim Robbins. I have to say I pictured Sean Penn's character a little older, but I'm willing to be won over!

:hi:

4. Spread the word
on the movie. There's a more recent thread on the movie which is discouraging. People actually walking out! I couldn't believe it. Finally, a movie for adults which takes the time to tell the story. With real actors and a real script. And people find it too challenging. No wonder we're inundated with David Spade and Adam Sandler.

6. Interesting what you say about their ages
as the characters in the book were in their mid-thirties...they'd had their kids very young. Jimmy was only a teenager as was Just Ray. All of the actors, including Kevin Bacon, are older than their characters. But, that didn't bother me. Well cast throughout. Including the boys who played the actors as children and the young actor who played Brandon's mute brother.

5. We went to see that yesterday......
and I LOVED it! A true work of art. I think Tim Robbins was so brilliant! If he doesn't get an Oscar nomination there is no justice. And Sean Penn was fabulous also. I think this is Clint Eastwood's best ever.

7. I agree!
I read the book first, and I thought the movie was as faithful an adaptation as probably could be made. The acting, I thought, was top rate, and I hope Tim Robbins gets a nomination for work that must have been difficult, to say the least.

I also was impressed by the settings, and how well Eastwood captured the cramped world or urban working class neighborhoods.

It was a full-out tragedy, though. The story was so well constructed; there really were no loose ends by the final credits -- except what Annabeth and Jimmy would be up to next.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoyed it.
