I just chased a bear away from my garbage cans.
He was here last night and I don't want him to get habituated to dining off my garbage.

3. Do you think it's a good idea
to be chasing bears? Didn't a guy recently get eaten by one?

5. Well it's a brown bear.
And if it gets used to eating garbage it will probably die an early death at the hands of some wildlife ranger. It's a tough year because it was so dry the berry crop was almost nonexistent. So the bears are pretty hungry, but he's got to eat somewhere else. but yeah, even though it's a brown and I was chasing it off with a gun in my hand, yeah I was scared going out there.

7. Maybe it was a cub from Chicago
They got beat by the (gag) Marlins and Steve Bartcop, and don't hang around Riglee Field until next April.

8. That was no bear, that was my wife!
Bada Bum!

But seriously, Brown bears are pretty mellow. They are smart enough to know that they should poke the humans.

12. The bears are coming down from the mountains
here also. They have been for the last couple of weeks. There are a LOT of apple trees in front and right behind the house so they don't get into the garbage. Black bears - and it's cool but makes me a little nervous. They come at night and leave by daybreak.

13. Habituated bears are Dangerous!
Don't let the bear get used to raiding your trash cans. If it begins to associate humans with food, it will turn into a "problem bear". It could get more ambitious; you may have trouble driving it away if it is used to "raiding" your garbage cans. My best recommendation would be to put the garbage cans in the garage or somewhere that the critter cannot easily peruse them. Wrap the very smelly food scraps in plastic, so that the odors don't waft for miles (that does happen).

I recommend the book "Bear Attacks" by Steven Herrero.
