Just bought my very first piece of fine art.

It's called 'Promise For Tomorrow' by Wendy Corbett.

Total impulse buy, just fell in love with it. It happened to be perfectly framed and I thought it so beautiful to look at. She's a phenominal talent. She paints her landscapes with pastells and her pencil wildlife drawings are incredibly accurate.

Check her stuff out, I think I might be buying more when I'm feeling flush. (This one was nearly $500)

I love love love original art, be it cheap or expensive. You just can't beat it. I tend to buy verrrry whimsical paintings (some from a fellow DU-er, eclectic melsky (www.eclecticmelsky.com). Priciest was $2500, cheapest was prolly $9.99. The others are somewhere in the middle. The pricey one got a beautiful $500 white gold frame (museum quality) to dress it up. Fantastico! The right frame makes a huge difference.

If you need a picture light, I recommend the House of Troy brand (they have lots o'styles and finishes, and are serious picture lights that won't hurt yer painting). I was just moments ago shopping around online for one meself.

Thanks to you, and to everyone who posted! Lots of good compliments on that thread.

Since the thread is closed, I'll say I liked the idea of the cobalt blue matte thingabob thingy. That could be quite cool. But then again, almost any color matte will look cool, depending on what you want to highlight. But, as I said before, I'd put the matte *under* the painting, so the rough edges of the paper show. :-)

You think freepers ever post about fine art? Or only so they can say how necessary it is to close down the tax-money BLACKHOLE that is the NEA and to also get rid of all degenerate art?

23. I am thinking along the following...

...I like the blue matte idea, and am considering a metal frame with a small detail. I think I'll go to the frame store and futz with mattes until one looks like I want it to look. :-) I like the idea of letting the rough edges show, too.

Edit - fine art to the freepers is dogs playing poker on velvet. ;-)

I'm quite proud of myself all the same. One day I'll be able to afford an original.

I just bought this print of a Marion Peck painting cuz someone snapped up the original on the first day of the show I think (mebbe just as well, cuz I'm not as flush as I'd like either), and I'm not even 100% sure it's a giclee (fancy pants print on canvas) or just a regular ol' print. For the price, I'm hoping giclee.

while personally, I'm an etching guy, the one thing I always look for on travel is etchings, (and the occasional small watercolour), they remind me of places I've been (and look quite cool, by the way.) I'll only buy one if it's in the first 25% of the print run, and then only if the print run is less than 1,000. one offs are also fun. yup, I guess I'm a bit of a snob there. I'd buy oils, but I can't afford any I like, so I'll stick to etchings, small watercolours and numbered photos. and I already have too many of those....

12. How do you hang your etchings?

I have one done by some cool old lady (in her 90's i think) in Berlin (used my slot machine winnings from a berlin casino to get it! fun trip), and I framed it but the poor thing is soooo pale, it just is lost wherever I put it. Maybe not all etchings are this pale, so mebbe you don't have this prob, but I'd love some advice as to how to punch it up a little.

15. use a darker matting

something like that often helps to break up the flow of the wall into the etching. If you really like them, take them to a decent frame shop and ask for help. you'll pay for it, but it will give you a chance to really show them off. I have several that are light brown on white. and I have off-white walls. so I needed a slightly darker shade for the matting to draw attention to the etching itself.

I always wanted an etching so I could lure grrls upstairs to see it (I guess it's better with multiple etchings).

I had it framed at a nice shop originally, but those silly folks never recommended a dark mat. Seems so....obvious!...now that you've said it.

Seriously, I would like to hang one of those pictures, I just like them.

They aren't "fine art," but I like them, because they look good.
I've seen a lot of "fine art" that, to be quite blunt, was asinine.

For example, stuff by Jackson Pollack.
(I think that's his name.)

Just paint, dripped all over a canvas.
It may be called "fine art," but it looks like something from a preschool.

You might gain more of an appreciation of his art.

Even if you don't, it's no big deal. beauty being in the eye of the beholder and all that rot. yer allowed to like kincaid even tho he's commercial---all art needs to do is appeal to you, speak to you, make you personally pleased for having it in yer life.

I have that same exact Jesus on velvet.

Jim Shaw put out a terrific book some years back called "THRIFT STORE PAINTINGS" or somesuch. Very amusing.

I just wish I could sell some of my damn art. Not ONE of my Rumsfelds sold last year at my one and only gallery show! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Ah well, back to ramen noodles.

Or else the dogs playing pool. Maybe even had both, but I can't remember - might have been an aunt or uncle who had one that we didn't have. But I do know for sure that growing up, within my larger family, we had both paintings.
