What my field is

I have a degree in International Relations from AU. It's an MA degree. I studied International Politics and had economic policy as my second concentration.

My undergraduate degree is in Political Science. I have studied abroad in France, Italy, and Japan. In my spare time I've travelled to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Greece, and Switzerland.

I can speak French and Italian. I do have a little bit of Spanish.

Okay. So what jobs are good fits for me in the Florida area?

You'll have a better chance of getting a good job in the State Department, for instance, here.

I wouldn't be too dead set on getting my choice of careers in Southern Florida. From what I've seen down there you're either in the service industry or the health industry. And the ones who have the real money made it elsewhere and just retired there.

Miami Herald. That's the only thing that I could think of. I've never worked for a newspaper so I'm not familiar with their hiring needs, but they might have some use for someone with your background.

9. This is what happened to me 20 years ago

You sit the Foreign Service exam, you go for a Ph.D and teach IR for the rest of your life, or you move back in with your parents.

Now. There is an unlimited array of jobs where having a degree in anything whatsoever demonstrates to the employer that you're smart and committed enough to get a degree. Unfortunately, in most cases, employers regard people with Master's degrees as overqualified.

Sorry to be so full of cold water. I think the advice from a previous poster that you return to DC is worth listening to. In the meantime, you might try the Law Library at U. of Miami. Or try these guys: http://www.ffta.com/newsite/home.asp I don't know anything about them, but they would seem to fit your background.

13. That has been my problem

You hit the nail on the head. I can't get receptionist or secretarial jobs. I do have a part time job at a department store. I wanted to get the full time job but I have a feeling it was given to the other candidate because I had too many degrees.

I used to work as a file clerk at a Doctor's office. I can do receptionist work.

I already have appointments with two temp agencies this week. I already registered with one and it's been almost two weeks--no news yet. So I am going to sign up with two more.

I did have a friend give me the names of people at a company she works for down here. I sent them my resume--nothing from them yet.

I can't move back to DC as I don't have any money to righ tnow. And I have a year lease.

I need something to give as it is very stressful.

14. You might want to get certified and put your name in to substitute teach

not just for short-term money. Teaching experience of any kind should help you get a better stipend if you ever go the Ph.D route I mentioned above.

In Wisconsin you don't need to be certified to sub. If you don't need certification, it is a possibility. If you need certification, obviously this is not a good short term job solution.

My international politics professor told us that most companies deal in international business and have a use for people with knowledge of international relations. Isn't Miami a big international port? There could be some jobs involving import and exports for you.

20. I thought about this some more

One option is to email or call some of your profs at AU and ask their help. They usually have connections. I am not sure how close you were to any of your profs, but I did this and it helped.
Another field you could consider is law enforcement. Having a master's degree might be a bit of an overqualification but I've had college friends who have become police officers and were happy with it. My mother also became a probation officer shortly after graduating from college in psychology, but I think that they would be happy to hire someone with your background as well. These positions can put you in contact with local government and agencies that you could later gain positions with through connections.
