If so, make some suggestions. I love latin dance music but don't own much if any.

on edit: had to put in a so so option for JB

15. Some more suggestions.................

Ruben Blades - combines intelligent lyrics with hot rhythms
Juan Luis Guerra - same as Ruben
Gilberto Santa Rosa - does it all, dance songs, ballads, GREAT singer
Ray Baretto - a legend....involved in all forms of latin music
Celia Cruz - the QUEEN of latin music....her collaborations with Willie Colon, Ray Baretto and Johnny Pacheco are fantastic but you can't go wrong with any other albums.....

Good starters:

The Buena Vista social club

Cachao

Celia Cruz (especially early Celia Cruz, with La Sonora Matancera)

Luaka Bop's collection of classic Cuban dance music, "Dancing with the Enemy."

28. A few recommendations... in and related to the Latin arena.
Edited on Tue Oct-21-03 03:22 PM by HuckleB
Aterciopelados
Kinky
Cafe Tacuba
Flaco Jimenez
P18
Dusminguet
Sergeant Garcia
Bebel Gilberto
Pepe and the Bottle Blondes
Plastilina Mosh

Most of these are more modern acts, with many focused on danceable music and rhythms, but combining many traditions. For my money, some of the most exciting and original music is coming out of the latin arena. Unfortunately, much of it does not get play on U.S. Spanish-speaking radio.

29. Alot of good picks so far in between a few idiotic posts........

Here's a link to a really good website for those who are new to latin music and want to explore even for the hardcore fans.....most of the content on the site though is focused on Afro-Cuban Music ( what is known as Salsa ) and Latin Jazz........Worth checking out.....

32. Hey Cheswick:
Just some suggestions:

My faves are Celia Cruz, Hector Lavoe and Albita.

Celia Cruz was the Diva of Salsa. Sadly, she passed away earlier this year, but she had an incredible voice worth listening to again and again.

Hector Lavoe was kind of like the Spanish Barry Manilow, but with talent. Kind of like a lounge singer, but good nonetheless.

Albita is a bottled-blonde Cuban gal (kind of looks like Annie Lennox)with a voice that is comparable to Celia's. Albita is the latest in Cuban-pop and has a bright career ahead of her.
