Poll question: Vote for the worst Number 1 hit of 1985-1989!

Maybe it's because 1984 was such an unusually good year for mass-appeal music, but to my ears, the Top 40 of the middle to late '80s really sucked! See below and you'll know what I mean.

And when I think of all the stuff I couldn't make room for....

1. It's nearly a tie for awfulness,
but I had to vote for Don't Worry because it is a god-awful lyric and a god-awful tune.

2. Don't Worry, Be Happy?
I like that one!

At least it isn't a total fake like Milli Vanilli.

6. Gotta be Whitney.
George Benson's original recording has far more soul.

Besides, the Crack Queen's R&B "yodeling" absolutely grinds on my nerves...

10. I dunno, the Milli Vanilli thing was kind of cool.
Most of the people who scored hits from 1986-1990 really, really sucked. Then along comes Milli Vanilli, who sucks just as much.

But here's the catch. They've managed to fake their way through concert after concert and appearence after appearence, and they are no more real as musicians than were Alvin and the Chipmunks! All that, and they don't really sound any worse than the other "singers" out there until the record skips. Then they sound better.

George Benson's version of this song is much better.

Edit to remove an error.

12. Oh Man, What A List Of Uglies This Is!
These are some pretty bad tunes. Eeeeep!

Some of the others mentioned some really bad stuff as well, but this is a pretty dreadful starting point. I mean, come on, REO???

I saw them for $0.50 at my high school in my frosh year. They weren't that good then and they never got any better.

13. Everything REO did after album 1 SUCKED.
They lost that gravelly voiced lead and got the "balls in a vise" tenor. His "vocal stylings" were putridly pretentious.
