Do you get spam on your fax machine
Here's my favorite -

You get what looks like an article having to do with weight loss, or public speaking, with a hand written note that says, "Hi Guys, try this it works", signed "C."

I've seen this in the mail too, usually with a post it note to make it look like it's come from someone you know.

Shouldn't a Don't Fax List be included with a Don't call List.

1. Let me guess. Herbalife or something similar?
Got one of those spams in snailmail. Same signature pattern.

2. No... But I Used To Get Calls At 2AM From An Automated Fax Spammer
I answer... hear the beep... and hang up.

The fax spammer thinks that it was a bad connection and calls back, and calls back, and calls back.

One time I got so frustrated (and since I was fully awake) I moved my fax machine to the VOICE line and actually received the fax just so that I could find out who was sending it.

It was some "you've won a vacation" promotion (if I would only agree to buy their time-share or some such nonsense).

Now... all incoming callers must also enter a 4-digit PIN before my phone will ring. Otherwise they get shuffled off to voice-mail and my phone never rings.

Auto-fax machines don't know how to get through. Auto-dialers for humans can't get through. Manual-dialers (actual human-dialed telemarketers) can't figure it out and rarely leave a message. (Except for Olin Mills and the Washington Post.)

It's now bliss... pure bliss!

3. You can get off the fax spam.
I have been on the NYS do not call list for over a year. A few months ago, I got a deep, dark fax that uses a lot of ink. I called the 800 number and said I wanted to speak to someone responsible for doing this. (I have 2 separate phone numbers, one used for the fax machine, but I put it on the NYS do not call list.)

The man told me that being on the NYS do not call list left me vulnerable to the other 49 states. I asked him if I had to call each state individually, and he gave me a link to stop it, probably in 50 states, but no guarantee.

I did not record the link. (I'm sorry.) It had to do with "direct marketing", but I don't think it was called the Direct Marketing Association. The link was way at the bottom of the page to ask them to stop faxing/calling.

I have not received spam faxes since. One night, around 3 a.m., when I was very busy, I ran out of fax ink. I was enraged that a Florida based company had recently sent me several pages of very dark faxes, doing their advertising at my expense and inconvenience. Unsolicited faxes that exhaust your ink supply can be a serious interference to what you want to do with your fax and ink supply.

I'm sorry I didn't keep the link. Call any 800 number on fax advertising you get. Put up a fuss, and demand they tell you how to get off all 50 states.

5. Already illegal
Spam faxes are illegal. Contact your better business bureau or your consumer protection office. If it is a legit business, you can call and complain. I did this to one company and they said I had given them permission to fax me new product info. I corrected the matter but they were vendors of my business and willing to work with me.

If you think this isn't a legit business, call them at whatever number they gave you and play along that you're interested, then get them to give you their company name, address, phone number, etc. Take that info to your better business bureau and consumer protection agency. Eventually, these people will end up in court, though it may not be specifically on your behalf. Might just be a new entrepreneur who got schmoozed into a sales situation and doesn't understand the law.

8. The penalty is $500.00 per occurence
and suits to recover those amounts have been allowed in small claims court. If you get faxes from a local company that you can recover against, it is easy money to take them to small claims court for every fax they send you (assuming you have the time). There are attorneys out there doing nothing but suing fax companies now.
