Any Indian music fans on board? Suggestions, faves, etc.?
Not too extensive a collection here, 12-16 discs I'd guess.

W/out breaking them down by titles and such (yet) my small collection includes ~6-7 Ravi Shankar, 3 Ali Akbar Kahn, 1 Buddhdev Das Gupta, 2 Imrat Khahn, 2 Haraprasad Chaurasia, 1 Amjad Ali Khan.

All suggestions re: artists, recordings, DVDs, favorite ragas, etc. would be appreciated. Plus, from liner notes, I gather that all of the above are from the northern, Hindustani tradition? Does anyone have much knowlege of the southern traditon (the name is slipping me now.) How does it differ? Suggestions here as well?

TIA

1. Do You Consider Qawwali Indian?
If so I've got tons of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. His nephew, Rahat, has a different sound but is true to his uncle's Qawwali roots.

I also like Ravi Shankar.

In a completely different paen to Indian music, I very much enjoy Asian Dub Foundation when I need something with a harder edge.

2. Thanks for reply. I'm afraid I don't
know what Qawwali is, so I'm too ignorant to reply. Can you shed some light on the tradition, style, what have you? Suggest some discs?

If I've got it straight, I saw the Asian Dub Foundation in San Fran a few years back. Laswell's thing, right? (Well timed trip for this Louisiana resident; saw Orb--and others--at Moby's thing, then 2 nites of Patti Smith at Filmore, and then ADF w/ others in a park day before I flew out.) A live ADF CD came from this, I think? I so, do you have that/like it? I liked the vibe live, that's fer sure.

Thanks again, LSL

3. I believe
the name for the southern tradition is Punjabi. My partner is Hindi, though, so I honestly don't know a lot about Punjabi. (Other than it's pronounced Pun-jabi, not Poon-jabi - it's one of my partner's pet peeves.)

We're actually going to see Ravi Shankar tonight. He's touring with his daughter, Anoushka. I can't wait!

5. That's fantastic!!
If you don't mind, could you share the town and venue w/ us?

Ravi Shankar's daughter plays sitar as well I think? I love the duet, jugabandi (sp?) thing. Alot.

If you don't mind, can you please give a report back re: the ragas performed? I think he ususually provides formal and thematic intoductions before he plays them.

No biggie if you can't get back to the thread. I hope you and your partner enjoy yourselves tonight.

6. No problem
He's playing the Paramount in Seattle tonight. Yes, I believe she plays the sitar as well. This tour was a surprise to my partner - he saw Ravi two years ago on what was supposed to be his "farewell" tour, but I guess he's touring this time to promote Anoushka. So it was a happy surprise birthday present for him. :)

I'd be happy to report back. PM me or kick this thread sometime tomorrow.

:hi:

4. One of my favorite disks is
a compilation of soundtracks from the films of Satyajit Ray. It's on the Angel label, and it's called The Masterworks of Satyajit Ray.

7. I like Bangra tunes myself
KBOO FM in Portland gives airplay once a month. I was elated that I knew what it was when I FINALLY went to see Bend it Like Beckham with my daughter. :)

8. I Have An Aunt Who Owns A CD Or Two Of Navajo Rain Dance Songs...
... and other Navajo music.

Pretty interesting. Last time she attended our family reunion campout, she let it play softly ... about 20 years away. It really sounded COOL and realistic coming from the distance... in the dark.
