The City of Sarasota has become the latest local government to pass a resolution opposing parts of the Patriot Act.
This from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune:
"After more than an hour of emotional public debate that culminated in a standing ovation, the City Commission on Monday voted 3-2 to pass a resolution opposing portions of the counterterrorism law known as the USA Patriot Act."
. . . .
"By passing the nonbinding resolution, Sarasota became only the third community in Florida to formally oppose the Patriot Act. Alachua and Broward counties have passed similar resolutions, as have more than 180 other communities around the country.
The American Civil Liberties Union initiated the grass-roots protest movement to help build a legal case against the federal legislation, passed just five weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Sarasota's measure asks Florida legislators to 'work to repeal certain provisions of the USA Patriot Act and to oppose the adoption of any new laws which may limit or violate fundamental rights and liberties.'"

Way to go, Sarasota!
