What kind of strange things do your cats eat?

#1 is kinda fussy.

#2 will eat any sort of backyard insect or spider, the crunchier the better. Dragonflies, centipedes, grasshoppers, big black beetles, etc.

#3 is crazy about crackers, any sort. Wheat Thins, Swiss Cheese, Triscuits, Crispers, absolutely any kind of cracker. She has been known to rip a saltines box open to get at the delicacy inside. She will also chase people around the house to get at the blue menthol cool rub stuff they've just put on. Edit: forgot about the Cap'n Crunch.

My childhood cat would eat black olives and Vapo-Rub. Made it a real nuisance to have a cold -- always waking up to find the cat licking you.

13. One eats chocolate....not good and I have to take away...rubber bands....

not good and I take away.......but lot's of "outdoor grass" which they have to eat when I take them out on a "leash" for their safety (they are "indoor cats") so when they "cry and carry on" I know they need to "go out and get grass" I take them on leashes and let them eat their hearts out of their favortie grass!

Geeze....I feel I have "pot smoking cats!" But, what I'm talking about is ordinary "lawn grass" that they have some overwhelming need to get into and eat.

Then they come up and "barf" the grass in furballs all over.....but whatever. The vet told me the "alternative" is to give them "Metamucil" in their diet. :shrug:

15. Styrofoam, bubble-wrap and sponge, and yes, I put a stop to it...

Our 6-year-old Siamese female, Rosie, is crazy about synthetic materials. She will lick, chew, and generally go nuts over plastic bags, bubble-wrap, plastic milk cartons, vinyl blinds, sponges, styrofoam packing, etc.

You never think about how much of this stuff is around the house, but when you have a cat chewing madly away on it, you learn to keep it out of range.

I'm pretty sure your #3 is actually my cat. She adores crackers! Her favorite is Wheat Thins, but she'll eat any. I've only used something like Icy/Hot twice around her and both times I had to shower after a few minutes because she was climbing all over me and grabbing at my hair to get close to it.

21. My cat only likes Fancy Feast grilled chicken or turkey

I cannot get her to eat the fish flavors. After her recent dental surgery, only leaving her with two teeth on one side, poor thing, the vet put her on prescription food, very soft, odiferous and expensive. I was just throwing it away, so put her back on the Fancy Feast and she is eating again. She will also drink the water from canned tuna. Loves it, plus it causes her to drink more. She is not big on tuna, but I will try again. It just has to be soft. This has become a very finicky cat. She would eat most anything when I was feeding her outside, before I was able to rescue her and bring her in. She is now a spoiled house cat and is becoming friendlier by the day.:-)

And the poor thing was on her own for quite awhile. I only wish I had known. This woman had several cats and my neighbor figures this one just got away from her. As I write this, she is perched on the printer next to me. Since her dental surgery, she has rubbed against my hand, but, just yesterday, she has not minded when I pet her, as well. Just the ears, though, at this point. She has gotten very shiny and soft. And is constantly washing. Just ate some of the Fancy Feast grilled turkey I just put down. It has been a long time in coming, so it means a lot that now I can almost pet her!:-)

You are to be commended for adopting those who need a home. Mine is now washing and knocking puzzle pieces on the floor! LOL! It took me four months to bring her in, but the result has been well worth it. And I agree. My friend said that it is not we who find them, but they who find us.:-)

25. This cat was hard to convince

The weather was getting colder and I was getting more worried as she failed to come around. I finally resorted to borrowing a "have-a-heart" trap from the animal hospital to finally bring her in and to the vet's. This recent dental surgery has made all the difference. Before, I couldn't touch her. Now, she has even jumped up in the chair with me. We take it, one day at a time.:-)

Your guy sounds like he knew what he wanted. And he was wise enough to make the right decision.:D

That dogs are attached to the people, no matter where they live, but cats would rather stay in the same place with a new family! LOL! Anyway, I lost my cocker spaniel in May. My tiny Brussels Griffon is lost without her. I adopted a terrier mix a week ago Saturday. My little guy is still not quite sure, but she has settled right in and I am very encouraged. She was found as a stray, but I can tell by her behavior that she was someone's beloved pet. She has made herself at home on the couch.:D

Bassets are very sweet dogs. I have two friends with bassets and they are both great dogs.:-)

35. I had two cockers and lost them within six months of each other

It has been extraordinarily tough. Thanks for the kind words. Barney was 18, but I loved him so much. He was the perfect dog from the day I adopted him at around age 10. Sheena had numerous health problems, but I kept thinking she could beat them. I took both my guys for acupuncture, among other things. She was just not a loss for me, but for my tiny guy, who found me just before Christmas. He and Sheena bonded immediately and I thought I had found a happy ending for them both since his owner had died and he was separated from his biological sister after nine years. Sheena's owner had died, as well, and I found her when I went to another animal hospital to get Barney's prescription food because his vet was away. They all have such sad stories. Like I said, they find us, as did my cat. Here are Sheena and her tiny "brother," Meneken.;(

You are doing a wonderful thing for your cats. My friend in animal rescue, who has placed two dogs with me, says cats are much harder to place than dogs. The little terrier that I just adopted would have been so easy to place as she is such a sweet dog, but my friend said there are just so many. And somebody has got to make the effort. Tessa the Siamese is crazy for Clorox. I don't let her drink it, of course, and have to keep her away from any floor I've mopped with it or else she licks the floor and rolls around on the damp floor to get that Clorox goodness all over herself.

She also likes the brine from black olives and paper.

not so much to eat it, just to play (relentlessly) with it. Once she gets going there's no stopping her, so when she's in the mood we just give her a small pile and let her do her 'paperwork'.

Pica is pretty common in Siamese cats, and paper is a Siamese delicacy. Some papers are obviously more delicious, such as the MVR I just got from the DMV. Luckily I had already faxed it to my insurance company before she snacked on it. She's eaten lab reports and slips for labs I need to have done in the future; I usually bring them in with three corners delicately nibbled off. I have to hide toilet paper; the kittens 'fight' it to shreds, and Tessa eats the shreds.

Ours used to do the funniest thing when people would come over.....they would invariably find a dust ball or something in plain sight and begin eating it, as if to say "see, he never feeds us....we have to eat dirt....can you help us?"

Mine spend most of their time eating, running around as though deranged, or demanding that I pet them, which I do. When anyone comes over, most of them act as though I beat them and hide! Mind, these are cats who sleep flat on their backs so I can pet their bellies when they're asleep, and when I sleep, they sleep on me.

I just saw a film called 'Home Movie' that you might like. It's a documentary about four homes and the people who live in them (great film, but I digress). Anyhow, one of the homes is populated by 10 or 12 cats and the owners have built their lives around them.

spiders and insects but when it comes to tinned food he's so damned fussy.

He has a tendency to stick to one variety for a week or even two, and refuse anything else. Then one day he'll refuse to eat it anymore, and he changes to another. Guessing the other variety can really be a pain in the ass.

37. I guess I am lucky. My kitty refused to change, even though the vet

put her on very soft prescription food that he said was very tasty. Also expensive. She prefers Fancy Feast from the grocery store. I know it is most important to give them the best food to maintain good health. My vet is very particular about this. But if they refuse to eat it, what can you do?:shrug:

My cat has radar that detects when a bag of marshmallows has been brought into the house. He then circles me, and follows me, and implores me, for his marshmallow. When I give him one he doesn't actually eat it. He bites into it, leaving his teethmarks everywhere, and "slimes" it, leaving a mess of goo on the floor.

Sid was named after Sid Vicious, because when I found him as a tiny kitten in a cardboard box in a parking lot, he had lots of auto grease on his head, making his black hair all spikey. Looked just like the famous deceased bassist of the Sex Pistols.

Sid adores cantaloupe and those pickled baby corn cobs. He once scaled the outside of a three-storey apartment building to get back inside for some shrimp tails (doesn't like the nice pink meaty part, just the crunchy tail fins).

He knows they're different from flies, too, because he approaches the wasps and yellowjackets with his ears down and sneaks up on them - then WHAM! - slices them in half with one huge extended claw (this cat has the biggest claws I've ever seen on a housecat, and I clip 'em every two weeks, too!). The flies just get whopped with a giant paw and gobbled up. I don't know how he tells them apart, but he definitely knows the difference.

My Yankee got stung when she was a kitten - got the stinger stuck in her paw until I pulled it out with tweezers, too, which is unusual for a yellowjacket sting - so she HATES wasps and yellowjackets. It was her first experience with pain, and she did NOT like it.

One (Penny) loves lizards, and only eats the back half. I have found still-living lizard halves on our porch, bleah! She performs a lawn edging service for us whenever we join her outside, but she's not real efficient...my husband usually has to finish it up with an edger.

The two orange cats (Penny, Southy) will pitifully rummage around in a swept up pile of kitchen floor dirt for old food as though they never get anything good to eat. All like tuna water, as well as fish food.

The orange male (Southy) loves to eat the suede tails only, off of ANY toy mouse that appears.

Zacky, the other male, thinks he is a dog, so I don't think he counts...

I used to have a cat (Cassandra) that ate sour cream & onion flavored popcorn. My mother has a cat that likes to eat plastic. Her cat is just plain dumb.

she was a garbage-fancier, but she'd been half-starved as a kitten, so had weird dietary preferences.

The three I have now - one would die rather than lower herself to eating any kind of human food or a kitty treat. She will only eat her kibble. One will eat treats and sometimes a small piece of fish or chicken, and he'll drink tuna water.

The third is my walking gut - he wants to investigate any and all food, and will at least try most of it. He would eat an entire turkey if we left a carcass unguarded, I think - he thinks fresh roast turkey is food of the cat-gods. If you open a can of tuna and don't give him the water, you WILL hear about it, for days. He is pathetic in his demands for bites of turkey bacon, but doesn't seem to recognize pork bacon as food (I don't eat red meat, so he very rarely encounters it and doesn't seem to think it's edible). He happily eats whatever flies and spiders he can catch in the house. He's considering the iguana, who is larger than he is (albeit lighter). He will spend an entire day licking a plastic bag if I don't go berserk and scream at him. When he wants something, he lets out the most pitiful little tiny-kitten mews you've ever heard, which is something else coming from a 20-pound feral-looking Maine Coon boy who looks like he could eat you for breakfast. He's a nut. He's also the only one of my three who isn't overweight.

Timmy will happily eat cat food of most types.

He will also eat Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch, pretzels, crackers -- he actually eats them, doesn't just lick the salt off like another cat we once had -- chocolate chip cookies, pasta (the sauce doesn't seem to bother him any), broccoli...it's gotten to where we offer him a taste of just about any food, just to see if he'll eat it.

My cat loves $19 a pound imported prosciutto. I gave him a tiny little piece of it once and he went nuts. He had never eaten "human food" before then. Now he begs for it. I wish I had never treated him to that expensive piece of meat.
