An appreciation of young children

On Tuesdays my son has a standing date with his little friend Jacki, who comes over to play all morning. They had a typically action-packed day today, playing Tent; Music; Post Office; Bowling; Construction Site; Print Shop; and Janitor. They also ate snack and lunch with great gusto. All this in four hours. I can tell when he had a good day because I'm exhausted.

Whether you have kids or not, you have to appreciate their energy and creativity. They just throw themselves into life with all they have. And they are such affectionate, trusting creatures. Bless their souls.

1. What a great topic!

I spent the day taking kindergarteners into the woods and teaching them about squirrels. I love asking them questions and hearing what they have to say. Everything is new and magical for them. I get a real charge out of teaching them new things and sharing nature with them. I can't wait until we have our own!

4. I helped chaperone my son's class

to go see the Midnight Circus at Daley Plaza. As a result of this some of the kids have taken a shine to me and I get greeted with hugs and tickles at the classroom door.

5. Isn't that the best?

Kids need every friend they can get. They need to know it's okay to just be kids. It truly does take a village. I love seeing the same children come for field trips year after year. They always remember us. I love it when the classes send thank-you drawings. Every one of them cherished!

7. I miss the light young children send

My life calling was teaching young children. Unfortunately, life circumstances have forced me to forego this.

Nothing compares to spending time with young children. It is truly the nectar of life.

8. I only have one child, who just turned one.

It is so amazing watching them look at everything with wonder--and the pride shows on their face whenever they figure something out. Wish we could bottle that.
