Anyone here interested in the increasing use of the 'evil'
I have been aware of the increasing use of the term over the course of the past three years, and am frankly appalled. Of course, it comes as no surprise that most of this infantile bs comes from the RW, but I am sick of it. It is obviously pandering to those who see things in coal black and snow white, with not one iota of understanding of a grey scale of reality. Evil indeed! I would like to know by what yardstick evil is measured, and established as such. I really thought, a few years ago, that we had progressed past the point of using such sophomoric terms in public discourse. :evilfrown: :mad: :hippie: :puke: :argh: :grr: :nuke:

2. No argument on the yardstick, but
I would like to take that damned yardstick and let people like Bill Frist, et al., dance on the end of it!

4. Evil
Use of the word "evil" (like "terrorism") is dangerous for democracy for two reasons:

First, it is implicitely intended to cut off rational debate;

Second, it injects religion into politics.

The second is obviously related to the first.

5. I was on another message board,
and some young woman raised by a "we only vote Republican" family was saying Hillary Clinton was evil. I called her on it, and I think we all should whenver we get the chance. I'm fine with her not agreeing with HC's politics, but calling her "evil" is a personal and unsubstantiated attack.

At least when we're accused of using "class warfare" when arguing the tax cut issues, we're sticking to the issue which they cannot defend except to start the name calling.

7. evil is a moral, ethical term
not a religious term. if there is truly no evil, as your words might indicate, then what the hell is the point of doing anything? don't you think tax cuts are evil? dont you think talk radio is evil?
evil is measured by your personal moral yardstick. I think certain things are evil, and I have no problem calling them that. It is measured in part by my experiences, epistemology, value system, etc. If there is something I think is evil and you think is neutral, then well so be it. (maybe its neutral-evil a la D&D)
aside from the use of evil as a scare tactic, i think an honest labelling of something as evil is ok.
