Ohio Man Buys Last Concorde Seats for $60,300

<snip>

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A Toledo, Ohio, man who bid $60,300 bought the last two seats on this week's final flight of the Concorde.

David Hayes said he was anticipating Friday's British Airways flight but under the rules of the charity auction he cannot comment until he appears on NBC's "Today" show Thursday morning to claim the tickets.

The auction, arranged by "Today," ran on eBay Inc. from Oct. 13 to Monday.

In addition to two seats on the supersonic jet's final scheduled flight from New York to London, the winning bid came with two nights in an unidentified "elegant" New York hotel, a chauffeured limousine to John F. Kennedy International Airport, ringside seats at the aircraft's decommissioning ceremony at Heathrow Airport, one night in a four-star London hotel and a return flight to New York on a standard British Airways flight, business class.

2. An icon of a lost time...
...the Concorde was supposed to usher in a new era of passenger transportation, and was a great example of two European nations joining forces to advance their cause.

My Mother-in-Law flew on the Concorde once, in order to return to NY to be with someone when they died. She said, despite the circumstances, it was one of the most thrilling rides of her life. And, true to form, she swiped everything she could. When we cleaned out her home after she died, we discovered a complete set of silver Concorde cutlery, a silver pen and pencil set, a crystal paperweight with the aircraft and logo etched on it, and (!!) the emergency instruction card.
