Outlook 2003 - MS Attempt to "own" eMail?

The days when you could forward an embarrassing e-mail to your colleagues could be a thing of the past.

Upgrades to Microsoft's Outlook e-mail program come with a feature which gives you complete control over what people do with messages or documents.

The software giant says its Information Rights Management system is intended to protect sensitive information.

2. That's the day I stop accepting e-mail messages from Outlook users

I need to dump Outlook myself, get a real e-mail client, and right a rules script to bounce anything with one of these funny looking attachments on it.

Might be a virus, you know.

People are going to be unable to maintain membership on some mailing lists that strip attachmens, and that's what these "secured" messages are going to look like.

If it can't be disabled, I expect no one outside of the business world to use Outlook. And what sort of idiots use Outlook in a place of business. (Ok, ok, I know).

and I honestly do NOT know why... we can afford MEGA-mail if we wanted... instead we have security alerts and patches on a regular basis :eyes:

4. Mozilla mail or better yet, Thunderbird

The browser kicks IE's ass too. Once you get going with those, you'lll see less and less need for ANYTHING microsoft--including windows.

7. I use XP Office/Outlook

I love it. Runs great and is seamless with Office.

I used to work with a company that used Lotus cc:Mail and Notes....now that platform sucked. I could never understand why they used that crap when Outlook was sitting on their computers for free.

5. the real clou

is that the MS decides on which OS their viewer runs on..meaning you will no longer be able view mail from any Outlook 2003 client. As MS has 90% market share :eyes:

6. Uh, what?

This is an improvement over current emails...how? I can already take any message and encrypt it within Outlook, prohibiting anyone without my public key from accessing it. We already do this with a large amount of our email here at work, and many major companies in the U.S. have implemented similar configurations.

Of course, this product will appeal to big corps worried about whistleblowers and subpoenas...self-destructing and non-copyable emails are much less likely to be used against you later in court.

8. I won't even use an email client that resides on my desktop anymore

I used to use Mozilla, but now I am lucky enough to be able to utilize OpenWebmail.

10. This will NOT stop whistleblowers!

Do a print-screen of the e-mail window or as many print-screens as it takes to scroll down within the message to capture the whole message.

The contents can be saved using MSPAINT or any paint program.

Microsoft might be throwing its fascist weight, but we consumers and whistleblowers will always be able to protect what's right. MS just makes it harder to do so.
