My TV has been exterminated!!!!!!!!!!
Today I have sworn off TV.

No more Cap'n Kirk.
No more Cap'n Picard.

No more Doctor Who (a British show I've been unswervingly loyal and addicted to for 23 years straight, and I'm 31 right now...     )

No more Blake's 7.

No more Laugh-In.

No more Fresh Prince.

No more Avengers, even though I rarely watch that show anyway.

No more Sapphire & Steel (cult British sci-fi classic from 1981, boy the BBC did make some fine sci-fi in 1981...).

No more Alexei Sayle.

Well, no more TV.

Given the FAA and fascist - er, corporate - America's policies (forced digital tv with copy protection to prevent home recording, et cetera) and the fact I need to redirect my life to something more positive and prosperous, this is step 1.

Of course, with 500 VHS tapes and 150 DVDs, I've got quite a few expensve coasters...

Golly, growing up is hard.

1. You've just done what I can't do.
Congrats!

While I watch very little TV I enjoy DVD rentals and Comedy Central...

4. Thanks!
I'll let you know next month how well I've actually done.

With the boob box off, I'll be spending more time studying for certs *(MCSE for now), listening to music (which still includes movie and tv soundtracks to reminisce to), and crusin' the net - personals ads and DU...

6. Smallville AND South Park tonight!
But, IMO, neither of those shows counts as the sort of "television" that ALL of us could do without.

You know, reality TV s**t like COPS....

10. Quite, your Zod pic makes me want to see Superman II again!
I bought that DVD the week it came out... :sniffle:

Maybe I can treat myself to some boob tv every once in a while.

But for the first several days for starters, I'm not turning it on. One day at a time. :-)

8. I rid myself of the evil eye fourteen years ago....

and I've never looked back.

The oddside effect is that there are a number of threads here that are written assuming that our fellow DU'ers are TV bound that make absolutely no sense to me. Kobe who?

Commercials are the other thing I'm PAINFULLY aware of. When those times I do come across the sour grimace of the cathode, the utter depraved banality of what passes for marketing in this country has far, far exceed the realm of annoy banter; it's down right horrifying.

Do advertisers really have such a poor opinion of the people of the US, or do they know their audience extraordinary well?

7. Good for you.
You did the right thing.

You will definitely notice a difference, *especially* after a good long while. It's like putting on those shades in "They Live," you'll see more clearly how *much* of an influence it has on people around you, once it isn't having the same effects on your own perceptions.

It's been about 9 or 10 years for me now. I occasionally rent DVDs and watch them on the PC, or see some TV at other peoples' houses : )

If all the people on TV don't seem incredibly bizarre to you, you're watching too much TV.

11. My philosophy on life is "Anyone remotely interesting is mad"
So now wonder TV characters are more interesting than real life folk!

I have noticed that, in many Star Trek TNG episodes, the bridge crew are all calm and everything when disaster strikes. Not a normal calm, but an abnormal comatose calm. Humans might improve themselves in 400 years, but natural instincts will still remain. (sheesh, I haven't watched a lot of TNG in several months and I can still remember whole episode plotlines and even certain scenes, yeowch!)
