How many pilots have been involved in an abortion situation? (Not a poll)

I aborted a takeoff in a Boeing-737-400 at SFO with 120 kias on the clock. V-1 was 145 or so. Takeoff warning horn AND flap/slat asymmetry indication. Not fun.

I've aborted several takeoffs due to small fury animals or winged creatures suddenly appearing in the runway, AND WITHOUT CLEARANCE!!

I've also aborted a few landings, mainly due to reaching DH and still being in the soup.

I like flying in and out of Asheville. North-South runway best I recall. I remember it's right in a valley between the two mountain ranges. I flew into Mountain Air airport north of Asheville in Burnsville a few years back. You see it advertised in the AOPA magazine. That was interesting.

26. I did a scary ILS into AVL a few years back

The WX was going down as we taxiied out at Charlotte. I was captain on an MD-82. We did not launch until after the tower closed at AVL. The AVL WX was 300 OVC and 1 mile. Winds were from the south at 8 knots. The AVL tower left Runway 35 (?) ILS up even though it's minimums were higher and there was a tailwind to 35! I went over with plenty of gas, not happy. Had to hold at the OM while an ASA prop-jet shot the approach. He got in. I shot the approach and broke out at minimums. I told my co-star that if the GPWS as much as farted it would be a fire-wall power climbout.

Seems the missed approach there is to a NDB, then hold, climb and on course at either end of the runway. Still, who wants to mess with that crap.

I never had any problems going in and out of Asheville. When I lived in Atlanta, I based out of Peachtree-DeKalb and it took me a little over an to get there. I fly a 63 Piper Cherokee, 180, 4 seat. It gets me from A to B and is a lot of fun.

6. I'm not a pilot, but

I took a reserve ride once when I was skydiving. You could say that I "aborted" my chute when I had to cut away. That was kinda scary.

7. I was in the backseat of an F14 that lost one engine on

a carrier approach. Pilot hit full about 4ft off the deck, we got a nice view of the island for about 1/10 second, then blue sky again.

After my stomach got up to the same angels we were at, he told me what had happened. We then circled around and made a fine landing...for a carrier, that is.

...10 knots short of V1 in an MD-11 due to an engine failure a couple of weeks ago...but it was in the sim...stops very nicely. :-)

11. Aborted landing

I was a passengerin a DC-3(?) coming into Charlettown that had to go around because of a snowplow.

And the pilot tried to take us over a sand bar, clearly marked on the charts as having only 20' of water, while the sonar dome drew 36'... let me tell you, the Charlie Oscar aborted that guy quick, and pulled us in without him!
