It would happen this way:

You may be walking one day maybe the first sunny day of spring… And a car will slow… beside you, and the door will open -- And someone you know--perhaps even trust -- will get out of the car and he will smile --- a becoming smile but he will leave open the door of the car … And offer to give you a lift.

1. On the other hand,

it could be some maniac who wants to steal all your money, take you for a long ride and then make you take a long walk off a short pier.

Edited for stupid missing words, LOL.

5. I would find it tiring.

No. It is-- quite restful. Almost peaceful. No need to believe in either side. There is no cause. There is only yourself. And the belief in your precision.

19. Maintain yourself
and your integrity. That's the hardest fight there is, but it's also the surest way to change the world.

3. And Jackbooted Thugs Will Suddenly Appear . . .
from nearby doorways. They hustle you into the black Chevy Blazer and sit on either side of you. The driver pulls off his plastic mask (remember Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible II?), it turns out to be Karl Rove, and he proceeds to drive you at high speed to a Republican Safe House, where they perform ungodly medical experiments on you, then leave you at 5:00 a.m. the next morning, bleeding from various body orofices.

What happens next?!?

4. And then the car will stop by an abandoned factory
in a desolate part of town, everyone gets out and goes to look at the right front tire. You get out too, and the last thing you see as the 160gr bullet from the 9mm rips through your medulla oblongata is a mud-spattered 75 205 R15 Goodyear tire.

6. But You DON'T DIE. . .
. . . for some reason, the pain is screaming from every pore of your body. You look up at the dirty grey sky, wondering how this could have happened, when you had spent so much hard-earned money on that electromagnetic-sweep security device in your apartment.

Then you remember, SUSAN! They'll be after her next . . .

at first. Drool is forming a pool by your cheek on the wet cold tar and grit is jabbing into your eyebrow. There is blood. Yes there is quite a puddle of blood congealing in your ear and you can feel the pulse throbbing in the holes in your skull. Holes?

You think that maybe your brain is small and that somehow the bullet missed anything important while pushing through the skull in and out again .

You realize that your arms are pinned undeneath your body, your legs akimbo and that if you can just rock to one side - you can pull an arm out and FEEL the holes in your scalp and skull -- fingering them like an autopsy specialist probing JFK's skull in Dallas to try to find the bullet.

But you are afraid your brains will spill out through the gap in shattered bone if you roll to one side and you will cease to think.

You have to try it anyway.

"Let's roll", you chuckle to yourself ironically.

Susan is gonna be royally pissed-off as it is for letting my big mouth on DU get my ass killed. She won't forgive me for 99 lifetimes if they actually go to her and harass and murder her too.

Damn why did I have to say it was Bush and Rove who planned the hit on Dean to get their boyz elected...

9. Finally You Pull Yourself to Your Feet . . .
the blood running off the butt of your palm. You reached for the wound, hoping against hope it wasn't mortal. To your surprise, the blood kept dripping but you could move, you could walk.

You stumbled forward a step. You reached for the gunmetal lighter in your pocket, and fished out a Marlboro from the crumpled pack in your breast pocket.

Those bastards! You pulled out your cell phone, dialed the familiar number. Susan's calm voice. "Are you hurt?"

"No, it's just a flesh wound. We're blown. Repeat, we're blown. Get a text message to Morphine. We'll reassemble at the Van Nuys safehouse. Repeat, text Morphine."

"Yes, yes. I love you."

"Remember, I don't have time to bleed."

Then you fashioned a surgical packing from the cigarette, stuck it in your ear and stumbled down the street, trying to figure out how to get from Arlington, Virginia, to Van Nuys in 24 hours. . . .

11. And then, since you are incoherant... you think... why I'll
take Amtrak, of course.
You forgot how it all started on that black night blasting through the Maryland countryside at a frightening 52MPH.
The bleeding has slowed down quite a bit, enough that you look almost presentable, as long as the metal implant in the back of your head is hidden.
That fuck Karl is behind this, I am sure, you mutter as you walk into the diner, scan the dim interior and take a seat against the wall to the right.

13. Railcar, Can't Sleep; Dawn Approaching Texas Border
Three days later, your stubble scratching against the dirty window, you taste 72 hours of slime on your tongue. You're hungry.

Wiping your lips with the back of your bloody right hand, you text Susan.

MADE IT TO VN SAFEHOUSE YET?

The beep and reply take maybe ten seconds.

SAFE IN VN MORPH COMING U SAFE 2?

You key in, cursing the small keys. SAFE WILL MAKE VN 2 DAYS IF NO THUGS AT TX BORDER. And then you press the Send key.

LOVE U ROVE DENIES ALL ON FOXNEWS SHIT

And then there was no more text.

You stumbled off to the can, wondering if any of the other safehouses 'round the country have been hit by Rove's brownshirts. Then uneasy sleep, again.
