Favorite random guitar parts from bands you don't really like
Alright, as I was driving around tonight I heard "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits and remembered what a kick-ass guitar part it has in it. Something about that overfuzzed, muffled finger-picking that just sounds so cool. It's not that I don't like Dire Straits, it's just that I never considered myself a fan. But that song rocks!

Other nominations:

"Back in Black" by AC/DC (Brian Johnson's voice makes me think the needle is scratching the record)

"Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith (might be a great song if Steven Tyler was not present)

"Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zepplin (yeah, I know, I'm deaf and I don't know what music is...blah, blah, blah...don't think YL16 hasn't already given me that shit ten times over...I just don't dig it)

SO what songs have guitar parts you really like but bands that you don't?

2. Oh, shit, I forgot about "Sweet Home Alabama"
I have always been ashamed that I know how to play that song. Sorry, Neil, it's just a fun guitar part.

3. Any guitar solo by Niel Young.
His singing's bad enough but at least he's written a few good songs.

5. I especially like the one-note solo in "Cinnamon Girl"
how cool is that?

7. Forgot about 'Cinnamon Girl'...
Neil Young had some good riffs--they all did back then. Is the riff dead? My ear is unable to distinguish the beauteous riff of a Page or Richards these days. What passes for 'riffs' these days sounds a bit hollow.

4. None from bands I don't like...
I like the riff in 'European Son' by The Velvet Underground just because it sounds so spontaneous and raw. Led zepplin's 'Black Mountain Side' is another favorite. 'Mohammed' by The Dandy Warhols has one of my favorite guitar jams--the average person might find it tedious, but I love it.

11. I see that we have Skynard and Neil Young haters here.
Both put out some great songs for their respective styles of music.
Some pretty decent guitar work to IMO.

Sure "Freebird" is a corny anthem but the licks are fine.

Ever listen to "Cortez the Killer", and "Hurricane", by Neil Young??

But haven't said anything so far. And yes, Cortez the Killer and Like a Hurricane are fucking awesome tunes.
