http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/05/01/teens.found.ap/index.html Which of these items would save your life if you were stranded on a boat adrift in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and which would you utilize? Let's examine this.
Sea water: Well, sea water would be a resource, of which you would have a huge abundance. Unfortunately, drinking seawater dehydrates the human body even faster than if you were to drink say, nothing. Apparently nobody told these lads this and they went and drank sea water anyway, which makes them stupid. This will be looked at much closely when we examine the third article in our analysis, faith.
Raw jellyfish: Protein is 5.5 grams per 100 grams:thumbsup:
Calories is 36 calories per 100 grams:thumbsup:
Water content is 68 grams per 100 grams:thumbsup:
Carbohydrate is 0 grams per 100 grams:thumbsdown:
http://www.thenutritionguide.com/Jellyfish-dried-salted.html So, at least jellyfish would have slight nutritional value. That is if you can get around the fact that your throat is being stung by their tiny nematacysts while they are going down. Hell, sea turtles love 'em, can't be that bad right?
Faith: I would imagine that praying to a god would make you feel better about your predicament, which is good from a morale standpoint. However, it may also bring false hope. Let's face it. People are stranded out in the middle of the ocean with no hope of survival all the time, what makes you anymore special? In fact when the end is near and you have prayed your ass off and there is still no rescue in sight, that may lead you to start to question your faith. Now, I don't know about you, but being stranded in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean with no hope of survival, my imminent death all but certain, would be the last time and place I would want to be examining deep religio/philosophical questions, such as, is there a god? However, they drank the sea water, which put them in imminent peril and survived despite their stupidity. So one must examine that.
So, given all this information I would have to go with, jellyfish. It was the only item that was of any particular use to the boys. However, I'm gonna call bullshit on this one and just say the boys were lucky, even though the odds were stacked against them. If they live anywhere near an ocean then they are just complete fools. Come on, "shark-fishing from a sunfish" that is just idiotic. They should not be let near 100 miles of any ocean for the rest of thier lives.
What would I have done in that situation? Easy, manufacture a shiv from the aluminum mast of the sunfish and try to kill a shark. Plus any object floating in the ocean becomes an oasis under which there are a myriad of small sea creatures and fish living off the algae that forms on the underside of the hull of your vessel. Guess they should have read Tristan Jones,
Adrift. I did. :P
