Not talking about gore, but a sudden thing that caught you so anaware that you screamed or gasped and your bp went through the roof.

the very first scene that is shot in black and white before the opening credits. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen it but suffice to say that it completely caught me off guard.

6. I love Night of the Living Dead, but it does not

scare me. No movie can do that.

And the only book that ever spooked me, was "Haunter of the Darkness", by HP Lovecraft. Damn, I wish I could find my old copy!!!

7. None got a scream, but the ending of the original Friday the 13th

actually surprised the hell out of me. (Okay, so I'm a doofus.) Chest popping in Alien scared the bejeezus out of me for sure. And the snake scene in Raiders caused my sister to squeeze my biceps so hard as nearly to break my arm (there not being much biceps to speak of).

It was "The Exorcist" for me. I slept with the lights on for 6 months.

I actually saw the screening version in L.A. By the time it got to the theaters, they had cut out about 45 minutes of the worst parts. However, I understand they've now restored them.

Funny story coming home from that. We didn't get in until the 10:00 showing so it was 1:30 am or so when we were driving home. I dropped my friend off and I was on my way home alone. At the time I had a '65 Mustang with vinyl seats. The drivers' seat had a small slit at the top from wear. I also had LONG hair at the time and every now and then the slit would catch some of my hair and pull it when I moved my head. Of course this happened when I was driving myself home after seeing the movie. I screamed, slammed on my breaks, and stopped right in the middle of the road (I was CONVINCED I was about to be posessed). 'Course it took me about 2 seconds to realize what happened and I spent the next 5 minutes, still in the middle of the road, laughing my ass off.

But I still slept with the lights on. ;-)

The original with Sissy Spacek, not that crappy ripoff in video stores right now. I remember screaming and literally jumping into my friend's lap. After that movie I couldn't watch scary movies any more. The suspense makes me sweat, tense up, get butterflies, and wish I was watching the Sound Of Music.

22. I was really looking forward to The Ring... My daughter had really built

it up, but I ended up thinking it was pretty lame... Predictable. Now, 28 Days Later! That was a good current horror/thriller flick (IMHO).

Then again, The Creature From The Black Lagoon just came on the telly, so what do I know?

17. I'm not a screamer, but

the initial emergency of the baby Alien in Alien did get quite a jump out of me. Saw it in the theatre, alone, and hadn't read anything at all about it, so it was quite unexpected.

It's driving me crazy, but I know I saw something in the last few months that I said to my husband, "I knew that was coming and it STILL made me jump" and I cannot think what the movie was. Dammit, Alzheimer's sucks!

23. I think the scene in a movie that made me think the most

if I could live with myself afterwards is the scene in "in the bedroom" when the father shoots the guy that killed his son. I think it is one of the best scenes shot in a movie.
