My son, when he was a little feller, found my old typewriter in the shed. This was an ancient typewriter. He was poking around on it and got his finger stuck. I heard screams. I ran. I almost ripped his finger off getting it free because I was more upset than he was and needed the high pitched screams to end NOW!

Actually, any time he talks he makes my skin crawl, but his mispronunciation is especially grating. Second: Anything by Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Whitney Houston, or any other "singer" who does not know how to sing a song, but use songs as vehicles to show off their vocal power. They should be carnival barkers.

blowing leaves around at my townhouse complex. One leaf blower is bad enough, but three, all slightly 'out of tune' with each other made an absolutely horrifying sound. I had to put on the headphones.

8. Good old-fashioned moral training

The spring of 1963, if memory serves.

The next-door neighbor's daughter was about four or five and had committed some outrage against humanity. Her father took her down to the cellar, made her strip from the waist down, and whipped her with his belt, screaming abuse at her with every lick.

He had also neglected to close the little window at ground level. Everybody on the block heard the report of the belt hitting the child, the old man's filthy language, and the little girl's pathetic wails.

Good church-goin' people, pillars of the community, they were.

9. I was broadsided in my Nissan by a Volvo doing 50 mph.

Both cars totalled, I had no seat belt... but I was ok. The crashing sound, the metallic CRASH... it sticks with you. Ugly sound, that.

My Honda Civic, with me in it, was annihilated when it was hit from behind by a large Ford sedan that was spinning out of control at about 40 MPH. You never forget that sound.

10. I was working in a hospital emergency room.

A six-year-old boy was brought in with a dislocated knee. The orthopedic surgeon popped the knee into place with no anesthetic whatsoever. The sound of that child's screams still haunts me, and it happened over 20 years ago! Thank God the orthopod is dead now!

40. I hate to break it to you, but...

They kind of have to do that. I mean, I assume you're talking about a dislocated kneecap, right? If they anesthetized you before they put it back in, they wouldn't know if they'd messed up or not, and they'd probably push it out the other side because the muscles and tendons would be too loose to hold it in the right place. Besides which, putting it back in is really quick and easy and doesn't hurt nearly as much as it seems like it does. Well, it hurts a LOT, but only for about a second, and then it feels really, really good, because the big pain goes away. All they do is just put one hand on the side of your kneecap, one hand on your heel, and then straighten your leg while pushing your kneecap back in, and pop! Away it goes and it's all good. (Doesn't hurt *nearly* as much as a gall bladder attack!)

I've done that twice now, and let me assure you, the sound it makes from *inside* (going out, and then going back in again) is worse than the screaming. It's this sort of liquid crunching popping sound, and it's pretty horrible.

in a eyedropper syringe (how he'd gotten ahold of it, I'll never know), and he screamed. I didn't know that they could scream so loud! He wouldn't stop screaming as we were trying to get it off of his tooth. It's horrible to hear something that you love in distress.

26. Stepped on a frog

heard and felt it crunch under my foot. He was well-camophlaged (sp?) so I didn't see him. Had he hopped, I would have tried to avoid him.

Also... when my son was 3 he rolled off the sofa backwards, and dislocated his shoulder. I heard it pop out. Disgusting.

31. Truck accident

I used to be a long haul trucker and I drove team. One night while my co-driver was driving and I was asleep in the bunk he had an accident. We were going about 60 mph down the highway and he hit the back end of a u-haul that was going about 30 mph. He hit the truck with the right front corner of ours and this caused a jack-knife and left us skidding into the median. The initial impact threw me out of the bunk and into the back of the seats. And then it was just this long skidding/screaching sound as we skid across the road and into the grass. I didn't see anything so for all I knew we were heading for a cliff. But that didn't happen and the truck came to a rest in the center of the median. Aside from a few bruises, everybody was okay. But I'll never forget that sound. I was actually very lucky, because if I'd have been up and in the passenger seat, I would have lost my legs from the knees down and possibly my life. The truck was one of those cab-over or hoodless types and the impact of the accident pushed the whole right front corner of the cab into the passenger seat.

I was hiking near the foot of El Capitan in Yosemite when some climber apparently lost his grip and fell. He hit the granite about 40 feet behind me, and I will never forget that pop...nor the sight when I turned around *shudder*

#2. ThumpThump. The sound of my cousin getting run over by a car when we were both seven years old. Damned driver never even stopped.

#3 (through the ceiling above me) Clomp Clomp Clomp Clomp *shriek* thumpthumpthumpthumpthump *pause* THUD *DAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDYYYYYY!!!*. The sound I heard the day my then seven year old daughter and her friends decided to play "mountain climber" on the roof of my house. Luckily, she escaped with only a broken leg and sprained wrist.

Saturday morning!!!

Well, not quite. I had cleaned my alarm clock radio after spilling some water on it the night before, and apparently accidentally turned the volume up. WAAAAAAYYYYY UP!

6: 30 came and I was literally petrified. My mom was scared too, but she had the presence of mind to come in my room and get me rational again. By then, we had figured out what it was.

Kid story, too: my son had a horrendous ear infection with a fever of 104. We took him to his pediatrician and she gave us a bucket of ice water and towels, told us to strip him because his fever had to come down fast. His soft, hurt little sobs still ring in my ears, along with the "why are you doing this?' eyes. He was only 4 months old, and it was just awful.

It's the scariest sound in the world. Mainly it was situations with croup, which each of them had as a baby and my youngest son had some serious breathing problems when he was first born (more than fine now thankfully).
