3. Volcanic cinders

On our trip to Oregon this past summer, we spent some time in Bend. One day, we headed to the Lave Cast Forest, neato place if you don't mind a bone-jarring road. The guidebook told us of a sort of gravel pit along the way, obviously a teen hangout judging by the fireworks, butts, bottles and cans strewn about. Digging through the volcanic cinders, we found these pieces where the drab grey is overlaid with unearthly blues, greens, and purples. May not be the MOST colorful thing I've seen, but it was certainly the most unexpected.
