Real Protection Against Spam

I am an EarthLink subscriber. EarthLink offers, free to its subscribers, permission-based email. It works like this. Any email sender who is listed in your address book goes directly to your inbox. If the sender is not listed in your address book, the sender is automatically sent a message asking the reason for the email. If the sender does not respond, the email is automatically deleted from your pending box. If the sender responds, you have the option of adding the sender to your address book, or blocking the address.

This sounds complicated, but after about a month of careful monitoring of your pending box, it is effortless, and reduces spam to ZERO.

If you don't have EarthLink, you may purchase a similar service called ChoiceMail, which works with any email program.

I am a true believer in permission-based email.

Or if you have a bitchin' email program like the Bat! (http://www.ritlabs.com) that allows filtering, you can do it at home.

But it is nice that earthlink offers that service.

I'd say more ISPs should do that, but of course, it would only work for those ISPs that would have your address book on their server. I assume you get your email through a browser, or some other earthlink-proprietary program?
