Have you ever been robbed?

I came home in the not too distant past and found my house a shambles. Money, jewelry, art, heirlooms, electronics, and a bunch of other things were gone. I can't describe the feeling of violation.

Most of the things taken were just stuff. Replaceable stuff. Unless you consider the family heirlooms. No amount of money can replace my great-grandfather's sword. He fought in the Civil War. (Yes, if you must know, Hilliard's Legion, later the Alabama 59th. And no, my family never owned any slaves.) Enough wandering.

I was just reading a bit this morning and a passage brought me back to the Civil War. Logically, I thought about the sword. Then I remembered how my home looked after the burglary. Now you know how I got to this topic.

By the way, if you own any firearms, I can vouch for the value of a good safe. Not one of my many firearms (both inherited and bought by or for me) was missing. Not one cartridge.

at the end of Melville Ave at the Dorchester/Roxbury line near Boston in the early "80s when I was real young. My friend who was with me in Dorchester got smacked in the head with a brick and needed plastic surgery , I came out unscathed.

4. Purse stolen from my desk at work

got wallet (all of $15), car keys, credit cards, cell phone.... everything.


Wallet was found several month later as the building was being (semi-)demolished for reconstruction. Seems the theif took what he wanted, and threw the purse in an electrical panel in the wall.

I got my fav lipstick back.


AND.... I had all my cassettes stolen from my car in 1993. Unfortunately there was one that I had made w/ my son when he was a baby. Us going through the bathtime/bedtime ritual--singing songs and such. There's one that can't be replaced.

5. September 14, 2001 (it was a hell of a week)

Someone kicked in our front door and took both of our TV's. Not the remotes or the VCR's just the TV's. We used our 2 $300 rebate checks to buy a 36" TV, but I hate the digital cable remote.

7. I've had my car burgled in a parking lot in Hawaii

They destroyed the driver's-side lock to get in. The only thing of value they managed to steal were my SO's fancy sunglasses. They somehow missed her wallet and at least $100 cash, which she had stashed under the passenger seat. :shrug:

They also stole a bag of clothes that we were taking to Goodwill.

The destroyed lock was not pretty. Neither was the back seat, which they pried off its base in order to get into the trunk (to get that bag of valuable clothes :eyes:)

We virtually never lock our cars anymore. We also make sure to never leave anything of value in them.

8. Twice Had A Car Broken Into

1) stole the coins from the holder and a couple of tapes
2) STOLE all of my luggage from the trunk of the car while on vacation. I had no clothes (except for what I was wearing) and no toothbrush, hair dryer... NOTHING. Part of our budget was blown on buying new necessities.

9. yes, once-- came home early to discover that the front door was

torn apart, the whole place trashed. money, custom and heirloom jewelry, custom guitars gone. the burglar had even ransacked my lingerie drawers and my sewing cabinet.

fortunately, my precious cats were safe, I found them huddled under a bed, absolutely terrified.

the sense of violation is almost beyond belief. for weeks, I couldn't sleep before daylight, had to leave lights on constantly. searched the house thoroughly each time I came in. it was a very long time before I got past all that.

what made it even worse, in my view, was that the management was aware that there had been several burglaries in our developement, and had not seen fit to pass this information on. I discovered this as I was getting double-key deadbolts installed. pointed out that had I known before-- the deadbolts would have been installed before.

be gentle with yourself, and know that if you feel odd, jumpy, whatever, this is a normal reaction. I am glad nobody was hurt, as you said, things are just things, even if heirlooms.

Living in New Orleans in poorer neighborhoods for several years, I became quite accustomed to losing material goods to thieves.

I was held up at gunpoint once. The guy took my wallet and then told me to run and don't look back. I did exactly what he said and ran as fast as I could possibly go.

My car has been broken into several times. I gave up having a decent stereo.

It was not unusual to wake up in my apartment and watch a burglar taking things. I would lay there quietly and let them take my stuff since being dead worried me more than being without a stereo.

21. I've been fairly lucky with the house

(knocking furiously on wood) - I've had things stolen from my car (they broke the back window of the canopy and took out my pack - which contained EVERYTHING - when I was on crutches). My stepsons have both had their cars broken into recently (the older boy has had his car broken into 3 times in the last year...it's absurd, because there isn't anything worth stealing in it anymore). Our neighborhood is pretty good about watching out for prowlers and such (plus it helps if you don't have much worth stealing), but I finally broke down and put an alarm on my car after the third break-in on my stepsons' cars. They weren't broken into at our house, but still - I mostly don't want to have to replace locks and windows and such. I need that car functional to get to work.

The only thing in the house that would really break my heart is if something happened to my cats. They're not replaceable. The stuff is insured, and I don't have much in the way of keepsakes or such. I'm just afraid a burglar would hurt the cats or let them get outside (they've never been outside, they'd be run over in seconds).

in Spain. They broke into our car and took all our luggage. Made for a real shitty trip.

Scary experience, but I was okay. Nothing horrible happened and the guy was caught with an hour.

25. More than once

One car broken into. Nothing of value, so they took a box of laundry soap powder and spread it around inside the car. Second time, my truck. A thousand bucks worth of Nikon camera equipment and lenses were taken. Third time, my car was stolen. It had a hole in the radiator-- the engine blew before the thief got two miles (it was a Vega. Small loss.).
