Northern Lights tonight!! (And I am going to miss it -rain in Chicago!)
Edited on Fri Oct-24-03 04:38 PM by xray s
Rain rain rain...Poop! :(

From Geophysical Institute U of Alaska

The combined shock front from three solar events arrived at Earth on the 23rd around 3 PM Greenwich Mean Time (12 hrs earlier than
forecast). The effects of this arrival will contribute to aurora in
northern continental Europe where it is now evening. Tasmania and
Southern New Zealand should be seeing early morning aurora now.

If the solar wind magnetic field remains southward, there should be
aurora visible as far south as Northern California, Nevada, Utah,
Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia tonight, Friday,
October 24th. The time of highest activity for any given observing
site is around 11 pm local time. Observers should check the sky
every half hour after sunset, however.

More activity is expected this weekend as the solar active regions
continue to rotate into a position more directly facing Earth.

1. So there's a *very* small chance that there could be
some activity, however fleeting, even here in Vegas.

Too damn bad all the light pollution will drown out such a beautiful thing, assuming it could indeed happen. The Luxor beacon ain't got NOTHING on Aurora Borealis!

2. Knock on wood there will be clear skies in Seattle....
It's clear right now, so hopefully it will stay clear. Usually when auroras are forcasted, it's overcast (big surprise).

6. Hiya, neighbor!
I'm also in Seattle - well, 30 miles south, anyway. I haven't seen your posts before, so welcome to DU from one of the REALLY OLD old-timers here. :hi:

7. Hi, pleased to meet you geniph!
I've been around a couple months, but I don't post that often. I'm always happy to meet others from the PNW! :hi:

8. I don't post all that often either
so my post count is only about 6700 or so...but I've been here since April of 2001. My husband's been here since February of 2001, and I don't think he's even broken 1000 yet. There's people who've been here two months that have more posts than that!

Gotta remember to go outside tonight and enjoy Mother Nature's own Laser Floyd show! :D

5. Oh, cool, it's been a couple of years since I've seen 'em
always worth a look! Maybe I'll have green glowing skies while I'm in my hot tub like the last time (and no, I was unaltered at the time). It wasn't until the next day that I actually figured out it'd been the aurora - I thought maybe someone had a green searchlight going for a car lot opening, or something, and it was reflecting off low-hanging cloud cover. If it's clear, it's a lot easier to figure out what that green glow is.

10. If anyone gets a good photo, please let me know...
My (incredibly low-budget) film company is Northern Lights Motion Picture Company, and I have been trying to find a photo of the Borealis that I can use as a company logo. I was hoping they'd show up here in Seattle tonight, but no such luck.

11. I looked at the N,NE sky tonight
where we saw red aurora lights a few years ago during a solar event.
I noticed a bright star twinkling with very distinct changing colors, red, blue, yellow. I had my husband and son look and they agreed it was something unusual.
