I'm throwing on some heavy metal to listen to as I post here on DU. Have you ever really taken the time to listen to what these guys are saying. The heavy metal genre contains some of the most pissed of, politically oriented music around. And these guys can really play. It might sound like noise to you but to me it's some of the purest music around.

Just suggesting that you take a listen or at least read some lyrics before you dismiss a style of music. Now you say you like country. I, personally, don't like country but I'm not going to just write it off completely. There are a few country songs that I've liked in the past and if I'm in the right mood I can really dig some bluegrass. I like other genres of music, also. I've been known to listen to some jazz.

"They scream too loud" is such a stereotypical pile of dung.

Yea, plenty of metal has overly aggressive singing, but there are countless songs on cds I have from hardcore metal bands that are very soft, moody with sincere and soft singing.

The musings of a fool. I like aggressive music sometimes. If the music is doing a heavily distorted gymnatistics riff on a guitar it hardly makes sense to have Celine Dion singing over it.

Geoff Tate of Queensryche was one of the finest singers out there. He sang with aggressiveness yet sincerity.

As far as the lyrics...Some of the very best lyrics in music come from heavy metal. Punk lyrics (other than the overly brilliant Bad Religion) are usually "eff you", "eff this" and generally mundane. Metal lyrics by bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and others are bordering on brilliant.

Of course you have your cliche metal that sings about Satan or death all the time, but you will find very little out there better than some of the metal bands.

Country? That fucking artform is dead. Me and my wife watched a couple hours of CMT the other night and its a joke. Nothing but the same placid, pop garbage over and over again. Country does have integrity, but todays country is pure garbage (except for the Dixie Chicks and a few others)

Of course I can't prove to you metal isn't noise, no more than I can prove jazz, blues, country, bluegrass isn't noise. What is the definition of noise?

For many of us it is neither unpleasant, unexpected or undesired. And its only loud if you turn it up, which is a good thing to me.

Of course being that "a noise" is any kind of sound, the drivel coming from you lips likely qualifies.

1-ANYTHING OFF Jason Becker's "Speed Metal Symphony"
2-Solos from Testament's former guitar player Alex Skolnick
3-The rythum of Megadeth's "Holy Wars"
4-The bass playing of Iron Maiden's Steve Harris
5-The drum work of Tool, or Slayer

I'd like to see what you could do as compared to heavy metal musicians Skolnick, Mustaine, Friedman, Poland, Harris, Clemente, Lombardo.

If you don't like the stuff fine...Generally I like ALL forms of music (with the exception of pop and beatboppy rap-love old school rap).

I am a monster Jazz fan, also love the blues, Bluegrass, classic country, avant-guarde rock (REM), Western Swing, Motown, Soul, Funk, Punk, etc., etc., etc....I play 3 instruments and have even written a song or two (in my younger days). Each form of music (except pop shit) has its own special contribution it can make to the incredible diversity we have. Most of it is rarely heard or promoted, but its out there.

To discount any form of music (save pop) shows a complete ignorance of music and I challenge you should go talk about something you know about.

I won't touch Becker or Skolnick (have you heard Dave Lombardo on the early Grip Inc. Cd's? Amazing drum work there, too)

Symphony X is a great neo-classical prog metal band, and another of thouse groups whose members are absolute monsters on their instruments...

19. Yes I have heard Lombardo

On Gripp Inc. Dave progressed from the early days to being one amazing drummer. Our band used to play "Seasons in the Abyss" and that was a tough one to play.

Holy Wars? One of the best riffs Dave ever wrote. He has a couple nasty riffs on "Peace Sells", I think Devils Island is the song.

Becker? LMAO...Who CAN touch that guy? A guitar genious.

And Alex Skolnick? Is my BOY. He's moved onto improv Jazz now and has really dedicated himself to Jazz, but what beautiful solos he had. Even on the CD "The Legacy" (their first blazing hardcore CD), his solos cut through the brutality of the music...I could tell something special was happening w/ that guy.

He isn't the fastest in my view, but is probably the most intelligent heavy metal guitar player I have ever heard. His playing is inspirational. And its funny...Even if you can pull the correct notes playing Alex's stuff, it never EVER sounds right. It's weird....It's almost like the guitar gods will let no one nail it just like Al. I love his playing.

his solos in the first Testament had a huge, yet somewhat un-acknowledged, influence on the generation of guitarists who followed.

say Testament for the first time 2 years ago at the Chuck Billy benefit-thing, and Al wsa as smooth as ever! You'd think he had been on the Legacy tour nonstop for the past decade!

I read about the Chuck benefit on his website. Great stuff.

I still believe (other than Souls of Black, which was just an album thrown together for the Priest tour back in the late 80s) some of the work by Skolnick should be mandatory teachings to young guitar players.

Not necessarily the speed (although Al can shred), but the feeling, the intensity...Alex can bend a note a certain way at a certain point that "hits". Its hard to explain. His solo on "Over the Wall"....Wooo doggie....Boy was 17, 18 years old at that time.

And they call it noise? Yea right...If Alex's playing is noise...keep banging me on the head with it.
