2. My grandparents watched with my little brother
Edited on Sat Oct-25-03 12:45 AM by Nikia
I never watched it but my stepmother was upset that not only did they watch it with him but it became one of his favorite shows. That was when he was in kindergarten so I take it that Benny Hill is usually not considered appropriate for children. Oh well, my grandmother also watched South Park with him.

6. You know, Benny Hill was really harmless
I remember me, my mother and my brother watching on channel 9, I think it was... The vaudville stuff was funny and the burlesque stuff went over my head. I definetly was not harmed by Benny Hill. Now, reading The Amityville Horror in 6th grade, that was not OK....

9. Garbage!
Over here on this side of the Pond we grew up with this infantile garbage. Nothing surprises me more than to discover that's it's become popular in the US. Should I be surprised?

14. The Old Fiddler
I saw a lot of Benny Hill when I was little because my mother was a huge fan of innocuous British comedy (Benny Hill, Are You Being Served, etc.).

I'm afraid it won't seem funny at all when I write about it, but he had this one bit about a poor old man who comes to a fair. He sees a beautiful old violin but can't afford it; the crowd passes the hat and buys it for him, and the old man begins to "play like a man possessed!"

The comic part is, you can hear him playing in the background and he's just tremendously awful.

Then he dies from excitement (that part is sad).

15. Benny Hill
was funny on the outside. I saw a very sad and unhappy man. That sadness and unhappiness showed through on many of his skits.

IMO.

16. "Hill's Angels" Testimony confirms this
Jane Leeves ("Daphne" on Frasier) was a Hill's Angel late int the hisory of the show. I read an interview with her (in TV Guide I believe) in which she said, as I recall, that Benny Hill interviewed each Angel privately and that he struck her then as a shy, sad man. She distinctly noticed the sadness in him.

At least he doesn't appear to have been a nasty old bastard, as some allege Jerry Lewis and Bob Hope to have been.
