Calling on anyone w/knowledge of the military ....
Edited on Sat Oct-25-03 01:44 AM by JewelDigger
What does all of the following mean. Would you please pick it apart for the woefully ignorant of such things:

'Navy Photographer’s Mate 1st Class Petty Officer (SEAL)'

What sort of 'job' would a person w/this job description do?

Thank you in advance.

on edit: it reads better ;-)

3. Picture Butts Being Shot Off?
Seriously, you might want to send a PM to HawkerHurricane. He's a Naval Officer currently serving on the West Coast, has internet access and could give you an informed opinion better than most DUers here.

4. You're right
That was a Navy question.

I'm in the Air Force. I couldn't give a flying fuck about what the Navy does.

7. Think About That
The next time you need Phlanx interference or a SeaBee crew to build an airstrip. I learned that from an ex-Marine ex-Freeper who told me Dimbo was too stupid and too greedy to know how to run any action without getting someone killed two years ago.

Hell of a smart Jarhead and one hell of a nice guy too.

9. I'm not really serious
Just a little inter-service rivalry.

Once the bullets start flying, we're all brothers (and sisters) in arms

19. I agree
Just so long as they keep their little rowboats out of the way.

No interservice rivalry here. None at all.

Former USAF and damn proud of it!

Although my stepfather and father-in-law were both on PT boats in the Pacific in WWII. Pop, on the other hand, was an 8th AAF bomber pilot in WWII.

6. Ok. In the USAF we would call this guy a Combat Cameraman
He takes pics of what ever action is going on. And is in the thick of the action.

Sometimes they take pics for BDA (Battle Damage Assessment). So we can see how effective our attacks were.

This is for military use, primarily but some pics could find themselves posted on the public domain.

8. SEAL's Are Cross-Trained
And probably the elite of the Armed Forces. If he had photography experience and happened to be in the area, he would have been sent if his CO was asked for the best man available to document an easy mission.

This smells like a photo-op to me since the only media around are the AFRTS and everyone else in the US gets what Dimbo allows.

15. He is a Photographer
He takes pictures. He is very well trained in that trade. He is an enlisted man pay grade E-6. His next enlisted rank is Chief Petty Officer. In the navy his basic speciality (Photographer) is his "Rate", his pay grade is his "Rank."

He has "crossed over" into special forces (SEALS) and has completed SEAL training. No mean feat. He can remain a SEAL as long as he can or wants. He will always retain his rate.

16. Since no one got this exactly right...
His rank is Petty Officer 1st class; paygrade E-6, equal to a Army/Marine Staff Sargent.

His original job is photographer.

He has qualified as a SEAL (navy commando).

He probably is a Combat Cameraman; taking photos of things related to SEALs and/or pictures during missions; everything from recon photos to post-strike assessment photos.

It would be written (short form) as PH1(SEAL). It could also be written as PO1(SEAL) if you wanted to de-emphasize his specialty.

My own is written as PO1(SW). This is because I don't want to give out my specialty to Freepers; I did it once and they tracked me down and sent nasty messages to my CO.

18. From Bluejackets Manual
Should have thought of this before.

Photographer's Mate: PHs photograph actual and simulated battle operations as well as documentary and newsworthy events. They expose and process light-sensitive negatives and positives; maintain cameras, related equipment, photo files, and records; and perform other photographic services for the Navy.

BJM the official hand book for Navy enlisted personnel.
