I attended a reading in Portland on Thursday night in support of a book of short fiction inspired by current events titled, "Politically Inspired." The book, edited by Stephen Elliott, was not even on my radar. I did not expect to purchase it, as my preconceived notion was negative, though I figured the reading would be interesting. As it turns out, the book is an incredibly pleasent surprise. I haven't been able to put it down, as gem after gem comes my way.
The book is filled with twists and turns of drama and comedy. And it doesn't preach. It's an exploration of the times through fiction, and, in many ways, it gets to core of reality better than the best and most honest of pundits. My favorites are by Charles Baxter, Stephen Elliott, FS Yu (long story there, see if you can figure it out), Kola Boof, Anthony Swofford, Anne Ursu, and Paul LaFarge. And I only stopped listing faves because the list was getting ridiculous. It's all good.
Anyone else read it?
