computer help needed please: Windows XP, DirectShow
I just bought a Who Wants to Be a Millionaire interactive CD at a yard sale and ran the installation. Now when I try to run it, I first get a message that says "Checking DirectShow," then a window pops up: "EngineStart MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Then it offers to send an error report to Microsoft that includes a lot of information about my specific computer.

DirectShow is a component of DirectX. I ran DirectX Diagnostic Tool and it says there are no problems. DirectShow is not listed among the tabs of subjects that it checks. How do I know I even have it on my computer? what is the .dll file name? any ideas here? I have DirectX 8.0--could the game be too old? It just says it requires DirectX-compatible video card with 640 x 480 screen size.

thanks for any help!! I've been secretly entertaining ideas of trying to get on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire so would like to practice! :)

1. Could be XP ....
I while back, I bought a video game for Windows 95/98. I had Windows NT. The game wouldn't run, complaining it wanted DirectX. I downloaded the latest from Microsoft, but when I ran the install, it would stop and say it's already installed on my system.

A lot of the older games were developed when 32-bit apps was coming out. They would check your system and look, for example, for Windows 95 or 98. If you have NT, although it's 32 bit, it wouldn't run because it's looking for 95 or 98 for the windows type.

You're probably having an issue like that. Since you bought it at a yard sale, I sure it didn't cost too much.

4. Have you tried compatibility mode?
That's how I run Command and Conquer: Red Alert on my XP machine. I just downloaded the patch to run the game on Windows 95, and ran the game in compatibility mode for Windows 95. Worked without a hitch.

Compatibility mode is something I always try when something doesn't want to work with XP, and 9 times out of 10 it works.
