Say cheese
Comes complete with a POLL...

Student faces criminal charges for alleged 25 cent cheese theft

ABC13 Eyewitness News
(10/24/03 - DEER PARK) — A Deer Park High School student is facing criminal charges for what he and his parents call a strange case of school discipline.

He's accused of stealing 25 cents worth of melted cheese from the school cafeteria. The cheese controversy may cost the district a lot more than that.

Tenth-grader Corey Campbell says he was just trying to get lunch in a crowded cafeteria on Tuesday when the cheese controversy began.

"I walked in and I got cheese sticks and fries," Campbell said. "And then I went and paid for it."

He forgot his marinara dipping sauce and went back to get it. He grabbed some melted cheese, too, and then started back to his table.

"I was walking out of the door and the lady called me over," Campbell said. "I said okay. She asked me what I had, and I told her cheese. She told me that cost 25 cents and I said 'OK, let me give you 25 cents for this cheese'. And she said 'No. Give me your ID'."

The next thing Campbell knew, Deer Park Police were giving him a ticket.<<<

1. I guess I was lucky then
The only thing that I ever stole involved school lunches too. The school decided to start charging five cents per ketchup packet. Sometimes I grabbed some and didn't pay for them. Unless, this is a repeated problem, they should just have let him pay the 25 cents and warned him not to do it again.

Assinine stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

I should remind you, though, that the law does NOT grant minors rights because they are not a provision for Constitutional protection. Which is really convenient when you consider how they are tried as adults, and for "crimes" that no half-witted d.a. would dream of prosecuting.

"Zero tolerance" comes with a price that every hard-working taxpayer should refuse to pay. Not a brain amongst them down there.

3. This is ludicrous...

Why would the cops be called? Waht the hell kind of people are running that school?

25 cents! AND he offered to PAY the quarter!

I'd fire the idiot that came up with that rule....Not exactly the way to teach youth responsibility; especially if that youth was already responsible!

:eyes:

On Edit: I guess I should not have expected anything different from TX! Perhaps they'll have a public beating....just hope the poor kid doesn't get executed for this!

4. Yes, it appears that cheese theft is a serious problem
Edited on Sat Oct-25-03 01:49 PM by Nikia
The article says that there are 1-5 cheese thefts per week. That's $1.25 per week at the most. I am sure that the $396 police investigation was worth it. These people obviously cannot do math. I wonder how much the cheese sauce that they throw away costs. I wonder what they do to students who don't pay library fines.
I am sure that they are just trying to prove that they are tough on crime.

5. I smell more "zero tolerance" bullshit
This is what happens when you take discretion out of the hands of people, and tie them down with a law that dictates all action in all scenarios. They probably have a zero tolerance rule on theft, and are required to call the police for any and all thefts.

Zero tolerance rules are also responsible for 6 year olds getting expelled from schools for playground threats. This is the conservative black and white world view in action folks.

10. You can add to that the girls who got suspended...
for taking Midol. No drugs on campus, don't you know.

The whole 'zero tolerence' stuff is the makings of a quasi-police state, and relly needs to be done away with.

The whole situation is revolting.

6. I don't believe this shit...

I can't stand the authoritarianism in today's schools. I have to go to a school with security cameras everywhere. They disallow virtually any object other than a pencil that has a point on it. You can't have any electronics on at all during school hours (yeah, even during lunch and passing times). They can search your cars for NO REASON at all. You'll have to pay for the damages, too. They can search your backpack or locker at anytime. No warrant, nothing. They'll take you to court if you skip like, more than 5 days of school. They're thinking about putting metal detectors in my school next year.

Not to mention kids are being investigated for POSSIBLY stealing TWENTY FIVE FUCKING CENTS worth of cheese now.

My only question is why. Why are schools turning into prisons? Why do we need this? WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU ACCOMPLISHING BY THIS?

It's fucking horrible. And, it's getting worse.

Deer Park officials tell Eyewitness News the school has one to five cheese thefts per week and this is how they will continue to handle the suspected thefts.

It's a regular crime wave!

7. The Great Melted Cheese Ripoff of 2003
I think it's high time school administrators, boards of educations and pta's get their heads out of their asses. Last night I was watching a story about a kid who lost a college scholarship because his school expelled him for one year, 3 weeks before his graduation because they found steak knives in the back of his pickup truck... from a camping trip he and his family went on the weekend before.

This poor kid forgot his melted cheese, big frikkin deal... the lunch lady ought to have her ass hauled down to the police station and be rubber hosed for being a stupid bitch.

I'm not big on litigation, but If I were one of these kids parents, I'd be having some seriuos talks with my lawyer.

11. I, too, would be suing the school district...
when we lived in Tacoma WA, my daughter was assaulted by 3 black girls. I was never notified of this by the school, I found out about it from my daughter. So...the next day, I go to the school to confront the principal.

Here I am, a caucasian, stating to a black female principal, that 3 black girls assaulted my daughter. The principal asks me if I am a 'racist'. This kind of floored me; but I politely answered, 'no'. And then asked her if she were a racist. You would not believe the look I got. I said I didn't really care WHO attacked my daughter, it was the cfact she was attacked on school property that made me angry.

The principal then told me, " I think you view this as a racist act of violence". I said, y"es, 3 black girls attack a white girl, that might seem racist to me. But it is the 3 girls who might have used race as the motive".

The principal tried to shake this off, but I would not be detered. I toild her, that if this happened again, I would be back with the police, have the 3 girls arrested, and my lawyer would be in touch about the multimillion dollar suit I would bring against the school, and the principal. This had the desired effect, and the 3 girls were talked to. In fact, it worked out that the 3 girls and my daughter became much better acquainted, and became friends.

I am using this little story, to say, that you CAN force the issue, and that if you believe you are right, you have every right to bring forth anything you can to effect a change.

the story about the kid and the cheese sauce, is a prime example of the idiocy of zero tolerence, and should be challenged. The results would surprise you and them.
