Desperately seeking creative Halloween costume ideas for 12yo boy.
My son wants to try to win the best costume contest this year at the school party, but we are having trouble coming up with a good idea, any sure winner thoughts. We are willing to do some work.

3. How about A Tornado?
You wear black, and with black yarn tie a whole bunch of toy soldiers, cows, matchbox cars, and stuff all around you hanging down 3-6 inches. Then when you spin around quickly, all the stuff spins with you like a twister.

Another idea is a bag of groceries.

7. something I did when I was young
I went as the Solar System. I wore black pants and a shirt with those sticky silver stars on it. My Mom and me made a big yellow sun out of a Matts Beer Ball and I wore it on my head, and then we used coathangers to make the orbits, and used styrofoam balls painted to match the planets and stuck them on the orbit they belonged. We made a shoulder harness type thing that the whole thing sat on, duct taped it to my shoulders and put the shirt on over the top of it... you will need to cut the shirt to go over the upright wires and then just tape the seams from underneath.

Edited on Sat Oct-25-03 07:37 PM by Iris
I remember on a tv show someone was going to dress up like a hot dog. I don't know how you'd do it, but I always thought it would be funny.

9. My son is a winner most years...
One year I made him into the St. Augustine Lighthouse... That won two different contests.

Last year he was a Chinese Parade Dragon.

This year, if I ever get my sewing machine out, he's gonna be a clarinet.

Hope the light goes on for you soon  time is running out.

10. How will you make the clarinet?
Not to brag, but to brag, my son is first chair of 17 so he might think this is a cool idea.

12. I think I'll make it in two sections...
One will be the mouth piece which I will fit over his head with a cutout for the face. The reed will be at the back of his head

The second section will be like a shift dress with silver tissue for the keys and other ornamentation. Then I will put a circle skirt near the bottom for the bell of the clarinet. I'll use boning to make the bell stand out in a flare.

He'll wear a black turtle neck shirt to cover his arms and black pants under the costume.

With any luck it will be recognizable as a clarinet. This is his first year in band and he's doing okay.

I'm willing to work, but what you are talking about is way beyond my skill level. It sounds fun anyway, I hope it works for you.

21. Roadkill thoughts...
black and white fake fur, sewn together to give the impression that this was once a skunk. Since it's roadkill, you don't need to be picky about how things are sewn together, as long as there is a hood, a tail, and some rough semblance of limbs. I'd recommend black or blood-red clothing under the fur, and red body paint on exposed flesh.

A red water-filled balloon could be attached to mimic entrails; and fake eyes glued to mini-slinkies around the hood might add a humorous touch...

22. Additional Road Kill Suggestions....
Use light grey fur like a squirrel and diagonally from shoulder to the leg use a marker or paint to make tire tread. straight up and down from the crotch to the neck you could paint two yellow lines...accessorize as needed.....

24. Headless Horseman...easy!
Go to the local Goodwill/Thrift store and get a cheap mens suit and white shirt. When you put the pants on, secure them high upon the chest to give him a taller appearance. Take a wooden hanger, remove the hook and lay it across the top of his head hook side to the front. Put the shirt and jacket over the hanger like the ends of it are shoulders. If it's too small you might be able to make them bigger with some wire from wire coat hangers. You can cut two small holes in the shirt front so he can see where he is going and accessorize around the neck with fake blood.

My mom came up with this for me back in the 60's - it was a riot!

25. How 'bout get with a friend -- girl -- and be Jerry Springer guests.
Can get the costumes at the Goodwill. Carry Nerf bats to bap each other over the head. Carry an old car tag, saying it is their mobile home tag.
