I miss the old DU
No, not the old software (tho I haven't seen all that many advantages of this one).

I miss the DU where if I were gone for a day or a few hours, I was overwhelmed when I came back trying to catch up with all I missed.

Now I can be gone for hours and hours and all day and longer -- and come back eagerly, only to find I haven't missed squat. A few things, but not like the MUST NOT MISS threads that used to fill GD, LBN, and Editorials to overflowing.

Worse, I keep seeing the same threads day after day. No, not dupes. Threads that were of no interest to start with resurrected again and again from the back pages, as if they'll somehow GAIN interest.

Where have all DU's superb thinkers, analysts, researchers, data miners gone? I miss them.

It's probably just as well. I have other things I should be doing anyway. But if things deteriorate MUCH further, I'll be forced to clean house or something instead of surf DU.

Anyone else notice the difference? Do you know when the downhill slide started?

Eloriel

2. You mean the old DU?
Where Dean used to poll in the 80-90% range in DU polls? I guess that's what you really miss now that he has serious competition.

3. I don't. These days I see alot more folks on the same page and supportive
of Democrats getting elected with very good ideas with a strong grounding in facts.

DU is on the edge but now there are more folks out here too and many things that we were saying years ago is now mainstream and generally accepted.

Hi, Eloriel....I think a lot of this probably has to do with campaign season. Things are being posted to increase interest in candidate "A" or "B" rather than a lot of the old threads that - I agree - were more substantive. They're still here, just not in the quantity they once were. As to when it started, I'll refrain from answering as I would be accused of doing what I said has caused the increase in the number of blahhh threads. A worthy observation on your part and I have a funny feeling it might get worse before it gets better. Which means: "Mr. Clean, Mr. Clean....."

6. research requests to foil freepers are replaced by Dean vs Kerry vs etc
Which I agree are not must reads.

Likewise weird stuff seemed more original and erudite.

But I still find enough great stuff - just takes a little longer. LBN is still the best "what's new" area of the web.

Will, Matcom, Magistrate, Professor, etc are all putting out engaging posts, and indeed the new posters are quite good, albeit they are over my head in many of the topics. And the fire is still there with IndianaGreen and others.

"forced to clean house" is long way away - at least for me!

:-)
