Urgent! Need help from middle-aged DUers!
Question of vital importance:

In the late 50's,early 60's, nearly all of the seven sibs in my family were made to wear the same Halloween costume (handed down through the ages). It was of a character named Chesterfield.

For the life of us, no one can remember who or what Chesterfield was from. A TV show? A cartoon character? A mascot for the cigarette named Chesterfield? We have no idea where it came from, and neither does our mom.

Do any of you remember this character? Can you help me out with this?

1. It is a cat?
If so, then it was a newspaper comic strip character. (BTW, still in my forty-somethings. :D )

2. No, it was a man.
With dark hair, and I think the clothing part of the costume was a black suit with a white shirt. Or something like that.

We can't remember if it was a western type character, or a secret agent type thing. Or maybe something else altogether.

3. Just a shot in the dark; could it have come from the
Chesterfield cig. advertisements. I seem to vaguely remember that the character they used for those was dressed similarly to what you described.

4. That's what we were wondering too.
We think it must be somehow related to the cigarette, but my sister tried to find a website for that and struck out. Thanks, tho. That helps us narrow it down some, and shows us that we are not suffering from group hallucinations! We were starting to wonder if we had made the whole thing up!

6. Here's one site:

Just the lion, though.

Can't think of any Chesterfields from back then, except the coat. There were a whole bunch of Topper and Great Gildersleeve type characters, and there could have been a Chesterfield.

Sounds like a butler.
