Why do snack companies put lactose in everything?
I'm lactose intolerant, so anything with more than a smidgeon of lactose makes my stomach bloat up like a balloon.

I have noticed that EVERY flavored snack item like sour cream & onion chips contains lactose. WTF does lactose do for chips?

I have to admit, this keeps my diet somewhat healthier, but sometime I would like to eat a few pizza pringles without getting bloated.

1. Let's see ...
Sour cream & onion chips.
Sour cream is a product made from milk.
Lactose is a milk product.
To make chips taste like there's sour cream somewhere in there, you'd want to add something that would taste like it.
Lactose could be used as part of the flavoring to imitate sour cream.
QED.

3. Thanks for the insight.
The thing that gets me is... I can eat cream, I can eat sour cream, I can eat ice cream, I can eat cheese. They don't have much lactose in them. It irks me that they deliberately put the bad stuff in!

I'm done venting. Back to my plain pringles.

7. jeez, I misread your subject line...
...and thought you said "smack" companies-- notwithstanding that I haven't heard that one in some time, but I thought you were lamenting the degree to which your drugs were stepped on....

Need. More. Caffeine.

8. No kidding, eh?
I'm vegan, so it's very annoying for lactose to be in everything. (Lay's salt and vinegar chips? Come ON! Third ingredient: lactose. Why? To make me sad? Yes.)

Worse for my girlfriend, though, she gets migranes if she touches lactose. :evilfrown:

14. HA!
No, the Atkins diet is until I get down to 180.
Exercise is for life.
:D

Though I must admit that knowing how much carbs effect my blood sugar will definitely effect my eating habits.

17. Lay's salt & vinegar chips suck anyway
Check the label. If "sodium diacetate" is in there, don't get them. It is a powdered vinegar-like substance that tastes very harsh.

Cape Cod brand S&Vs use real vinegar, and may not contain lactose. I'm not lactose intolerant so I never really noticed, but the chips are far superior to those crappy-ass fake S&Vs the major firms make.

The very best S&Vs are made by Smiths in Holland, but you can't get those here.

10. For the same reason soup companies put MSG in everything?
To hide the fact that their products taste like *SHIT* without tons of added salt, sugar and fat?

The *only* canned soup I can eat is the really expensive organic stuff and a few oddball flavors from some non-brand names.
Bastids.

13. Funniest scene in "28 days later"
Frank(the father) is looking for fresh fruits and veggies in the supermarket, and they are all rotten except for a thing of pears.

"Irradiated" he says with a smile, and takes them.
