Happy Halloween! Welcome to the 2003 Halloween Edition of MONDAYS IN THE UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD . A place deep down within
The Democratic Underground where we meet, greet, answer questions of the day, ignore "spell check" and attempt to jump-start your week ahead. The ghosts have departed from the haunted house and today we jump-start
Halloween with a variety of topics and questions. If this is your first visit to the
Undergroundrailroad, I will roll out the
RED CARPET for you!
Today we are serving up several Halloween specialties. I think you will see that Halloween is *not* just for kids. Take your pick! How about? http://www.night.net/halloween/treats.html-ssi Edible Eyeballs ? OR Apricot Pecan Upside Down Cake?? Actually there are so many Desserts and graphics, that I can't possibly name all of them. BUT, I have a link for the
Apricot Pecan Upside Down Cake and it will provide a little Halloween music while you copy/print the recipe

*not* an official holiday, Halloween has become one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals on the contemporary American calendar. Halloween, as we know it today, has become a fun filled 24 hours of daytime parties, community gatherings, after work celebrations and nighttime trick-or-treating with children enchanting our streets in mass. But it was not always that idyllic for African-Americans, such as myself, to celebrate.
Halloween in the Jim Crow Era became something of a dichotomy between children who were divided into two groups. There was always that invisible dividing line when we mapped our trick-or-treating routes. It was understood that certain neighborhoods, the ones that offered the best candy and money, were off limits to us. But our level of excitement never changed. I loved Halloween and was always in genuine awe of all the kids in my block running beneath a moon lit sky. Pirates, princesses, ghosts and popular heroes of the day all holding open bags to catch those Halloween goodies! All of us pledging to "out do" each other with heavy,
heavy bags. Some of my friends, usually the older and more daring ones, would hide behind their masks to obtain those better pieces of candy hoping that their hands beneath their costumes would not betray who they
really were. If there was that uncertainty, after that initial shout of "trick-or-treat", you were told to wait at the door after candy was distributed to the white children first. Your thinking, how could they possibly know who I
really am?
For me it was pure bliss to spill your trick-or-treat bag out on the floor and count your candy. Any chocolate in your bag was a premium "get". My mother would carefully examine everything in our bags and Mom would debate the questionable stuff with the jab of a fork. If it didn't pass Mom's smell test, it was gone. Post trick-or-treat we could look forward to dried pumpkin seeds, warm popcorn balls, and hot chocolate. Then my mother would would read one scary story before the night was over. Over? NOT! It was only just beginning for me and my siblings. I shared a room with my sister and my brother would sneak in because we told him a ghost was going to 'get' into his bedroom. We then pulled the sheets over our heads to form a tent and tried to outdo each other (in low voices) with one scary story after the other until all of us were asleep.
Halloween was over. ___________________________ THE FORTUNE TELLER VISITS THE UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD TODAY ONLY. HAVE YOUR FORTUNE TOLD FREE ! Yes, you read that correctly.
