1. '76 Pacer!

bought it in '83. maroon, with black interior. Good car, and lasted well until it started going bad, then it all went bad at once, about 1986.

I miss that car. Could go around turns quite fast in that car!

That was my first car too. It only cost $100. It was a POS, gas gauge didn't work, doors sagged so much they would barely close, and it had a cracked exhaust manifold, making it sound like a steam locamotive on a steep grade.

What year did you buy yours? I had friends who had Pacers, also, and all of ours died utterly within a year of each others. It was amazing - they all ran fine, then just up and died. No long period of making small repairs to keep them going. Everything straight to hell at once.

my dad bought for me for $50. No steering because it was CONSTANTLY leaking fluids. It was quickly dumped for a 1983 two-tone Mercury Zephyr (Ugliest car I've ever seen) which quickly met with an accident, and then a 1990 Chevy Nova, which also met with an accident. Now I have a 2000 Toyota Echo which is running fine, with the lease soon up, we're looking into BUYING a 2003 Toyota Camry.

'74 Pinto, down to 3 cylinders and 300,000+ miles when I got it. I got it from my mom for the $75 she owed me. Had to replace the starter first thing. This thing was so crappy, the seat adjuster broke, and I had to put a brick behind the seat to hold it.

Oh, it gets better.

While Mom had it, she painted it. No, she didn't pay someone to paint it, SHE did it. She bought about 50 cans of spray paint from Western Auto and did it all herself. Then I added the pimped out pin-striping.

That was one sweet ride. </sarcasm>

Bought it new. I had $1200, my dad made up the difference to get me a new car for my 1st year of college. Got it in Sept. 1972.

Didn't blow up on me either. It also had Firestone 500 tires on it. So, i guess that proves that the early to mid 70's were not my time to die.

An exploding car with tires that cut their own sidewalls out. It's not like i had the safest transportation.

but not the runabout. My dad gave it to me when I was 14. He tried to sell it, but couldn't get a decent price for it. He gave it to me since he figured that I would be needing something to drive in a couple of years anyway.

It also had the famous Firestone 500 tires on it, and my dad had never taken the car in to get the exploding gas tank fixed.

So I guess that I'm not the only one who beat the odds in the 70's.

I ended up giving it back to my brother who then gave it to someone else when I bought a "real car". Holes were rusting through the floor by then but it still didn't burn oil.

Step side bed. It was a pretty cool truck, but I didn't have it long. It burned oil and I didn't understand the concept at the time, eo I never checked the oil. Either the oil light wasn't functioning or it didn't have one and I ran it out of oil and the engine seized up on me. I traded it plus $400 for a '76 Chevy Impala wagon that did run. Talk about a tank, that was one big car.

By the time I was driving it in 2000, it was definitely a senior citizen as a vehicle, but I loved that thing. I didn't necessarily drive it like I loved it, though... oh well, maybe I just put in the typical amount of abuse a sixteen year old puts on their first car. I once took it "mudding", loved peeling out in it, let my fourteen year old friend drive it, etc. Luckily I got the craziness out of my system pretty quickly.

Pretty dark blue minivan that I had lots of sentimental attachment to, but the interior ceiling cover was falling in... hanging about an inch below where it should be, the gear shift was all off by one (you had to put it into neutral to go into reverse, etc.), it would occasionally die when you stopped at traffic lights, and by the time the AC went out (definition of hell in the south) and then it started leaking oil that was about the end of my adventures with the Caravan.

80. Insanely Quick, 1976 Plymouth Duster (The Lava Machine)

Not really the right car for a new driver :). It had a 360 C.I.D motor, with all of the emission controls professionally removed, and a 850 CFM carburetor. The motor was slightly warmed by the owner (he used to build nitro 426's for Chrysler). This car was extremely quick and all of my friends called it the Lava Machine. I got the car when I was 15 and had two points before I even got my license. I got another four within a week of getting my license (competition driving). It was dangerous as hell to boot. It was in an accident and the front end was rebuilt. There was some damage to the suspension that could not be fixed, so every time you went over a dip in the pavement you never knew what would happen. I loved that car

No heat, of course, but I lived in Tucson. Also, you couldn't open the passenger door from the inside, but had to roll down the window and use the outside handle. At the time I owned it, (1967-68), we were having gas price wars in Tucson, and gas was between fourteen and seventeen or eighteen CENTS per gallon! I'd fill it up every two weeks and pay one dollar and eighty cents. Oh, and no gas gauge, but I had the reserve tank. And a manual choke. Loved that car.

I think it was an '86. I put a glass-pack "muffler" on it. I say a glass pack because it was a straight six, and I couldn't afford the split manifold thing so I couldn't put duels on it. It sounded like a fart. But it was my fart, dammit, and I loved that car!

It already had 81k miles on it (and only three operational cylinders) when my pop sort of let me 'inherit' it to learn to drive. The thing had been badly wrecked (sideswiped during an ice storm, shoved over the top of a fire hydrant while it was sitting still, outside where Dad worked in downtown Cincinnati) and always pulled to the right; my friends used to tease me it was dowsing for the water in the ditch. Couldn't get it over 50 miles an hour, or the quivering would snap your neck. It only had an AM radio, so we used to drive around with a tape player hanging off the rearview mirror. The driver's side rearview fell off at around 50k miles and Dad never replaced it -- to this day, I still turn my head and look behind the driver's side of the car when I back up, even though that was 20 years ago. The undercarriage was so rusted out, the battery had to be secured to the front end with baling twine. Oh, yeah -- and it had cancer holes on one side you could stick your head all the way in.

I loved that car.

I know more then two people had Vegas. Come on fess up.
She was a little hatchback, dark green and I put in a 8 track. Loved her for 3 years and then she just froze up on me. I sold her for 100 bucks a month before I went into the Air Force.
I would never give one of my kids a small car like that to learn how to drive on but I guess back in those days we didn't think about it.

I don't think my Vega lasted to 81,000 miles. Yours did much better then mine.

My parents bought it for $250 to be the "kids' car". They figured that way, we wouldn't wreck their cars.
The Cutlass was a great car. The body was rusting badly and it got poor mileage, but it started every morning even when buried under snow, sometimes even when my mom's new Dodge Colt, parked in the garage, would not start. We had only two repairs in the three years we had it-basic brake repairs and new coils for the radiator.
It didn't handle ice and snow-covered roads very well (it did do great donuts, though), but it didn't have front wheel drive. It went 0 to 60 in about 5 seconds. They don't make cars like that anymore.

124. Confession time

The first vehicle I ever owned was a 1982 Yamaha Vision motorcycle. I put 20,000 miles on it, went to Korea for a year and sold it because the alternator went out and I didn't know how to fix it.

Then I went to Berlin for six years and my vehicle was a Cannondale racing bike.

The first car I ever owned was a 1993 Dodge Dakota Sport pickup.

127. '73 Cadillac Coup deVille

in 1985. It was a land yacht. I remember watching the gas gauge decline when I hit the pedal. The good thing was that I was not going to be killed in a car accident.

I wish I had that car today. Oh the good times had by a sixteen year old with a clunker caddy; if only that car could talk.

128. '59 Porsche 1600 S

It was very fast and had a six stage paint job.
I came from an affluent background.
this was in 1967. We were spoiled; but like to think we appreciated it. I was very philosophical about it. After all ,the 60's were in high gear.and it was So Cal; Hollywood nights...Mulholland Drive...Zuma Beach....
