Cats or Dogs?
The eternal question is what do you like better Cats or Dogs.

Here are my dos persos:
I prefer cats to dogs for many reasons.
1. They are pretty LM (low-maintenance) pets. You can leave a cat alone for days at a time as long as they have access to food and water.
2. Cats are not as needy as dogs. Dogs are up in your business all the time. They are too co-depentdent. Having a cat is like having a friend that you get together with when one or the other of you feels the need for a little companionship.
3. Cats pick you. You are their person, not the other way around. if the cat doesn't pick you as their person, they will tolerate you but never really belong to you. Dogs will belong to anybody that feeds them and pets them. Not a whole lot of discriminating taste in a dog.
4. Purring kicks the crap out of barking. There is little finer in life than having your kitty all curled up and purring for you. It means that you are loved and that they are content. They are also very quiet pets to own. Dogs make too damn much noise.

There are many other reasons why I prefer cats to dogs.
Mind you: I do not HATE dogs. I just prefer cats. If you are going to chime in on HATING one or the other, be specific about what in their behavior bothers you. Don't just go I HATE ---. ---s suck. Please be as specific as possible.

1. I like dogs and cats, but dogs are warmer, I think.
George Bernard Shaw was asked who is smarter, men or women. He replied, "Which man and which woman?" I think maybe the same is true for this question.

Dogs are loyal. They don't bail on you if things get ugly, you can count on them to bare their teeth and and fight it out by your side.

Dogs are useful. They can alert you of intruders and if they are big they can scare them off.

Dogs are friendly. Unlike cats dogs are more then happy to be your friend all the time. Cats have mental problems and go crazy for no reason too often to be relied upon.

Dogs are ready to go anywhere anytime. When was the last time anyone went to play frisbee at the park with their cat? A dog goes where you go and does what you do. If I was allowed to take my dog to work he'd be here and it would be great.

Dogs don't hate you for pushing them away for a moment while you try to will your teams field goal attempt thru the damn uprights in overtime. My dog even watches the TV with me sensing something important is happening.

I prefer Dogs but I still like cats. In fact I like everything. If I could have chipmunks I would.

4. Love ALL animals.
I feed birds and squirrels and the cats wear bells so the wildlife has an even shot. I even like the racoon who trashes my garbage cans and the woodchuck (GOD is he cute) that lives in the abandoned woodpile behind the neighbor's garage.

As to dogs over cats:

1. If I leave my pets alone for a few days, I don't think I'm being responsible (no offense.) They depend on me; both the dogs and the cats, and I always make certain I have a "sitter."

2. I LIKE that my dogs "need" me. Not many people seem to like me (or anyone else) very much, and a friend who always loves you seems like a "plus" to me.

3. Cats are aloof. I think if I just had cats, the rejection factor would be an issue. Live in my house, be my friend; so the dogs help the cats in that way.

4. Dogs are loud, but cats NEVER stop meowing. I can take temporary noise, but when the cats are in for foul weather and they don't want to be, it's like feline water torture. I'll take the barking: the dogs shut up when I tell them to. MOST of the time.

As to cats, they are nice people, just not civilized enough for my taste: too wild. Maybe in another few thousand years....But I don't hate them .

9. Simple for me: dogs are better.
Because cats can't pull for sh*t.

When an all-cat team wins Iditarod, then we'll talk. ;)

10. I love all critters
I have a soft spot for both cats and dogs; they both have their place. Right now, I don't have any dogs because it wouldn't be fair to them; we're not home during the day and don't have a fenced yard, so the dogs would be shut in and lonely. It's not kind to a pack animal to leave it alone during the day. Dogs need a pack. My cats sleep most of the day when I'm gone, and are happyhappy to see me when I come home, so it's easier on them than it would be on a dog. (When I come home unexpectedly early, I always bust the cats sleeping like the dead - if I come home at my usual time, they're all at the door to greet me.)

I don't really like the idea that some people actually hate one species or the other. How could you hate ALL dogs or ALL cats? They have horrid individuals and wonderful individuals, just like most other species. People who say they loathe one or the other - well, I don't really trust people that don't like animals.
