Poll question: Favorite classic soul record from the Windy City?

During the '60s and '70s, hundreds (if not thousands) of great soul records came out of Chicago. For this poll, I simply picked ten songs that did well nationally. Please keep that in mind before you ask me why this song or that song isn't listed below. Thanks!

5. Between jumpin Jackie Wison and "Have you seen Her" and I

picked "Higher and Higher". Good post NightTrain, I wasn't aware all these artists came out of the Windy City. I would have thought most of them were part of the Motown music scene. When just made me think of a movie I saw about Motown several years ago and I think it was about the Temptations. Truly amazing how many great groups got their start in Motown.

8. "The Monkey Time" is a steaming pile of feces...

Seriously. It's a god-awful piece of crap. When The Tubes put it on their "Outside Inside" album, one of the founders insisted that the liner notes state that he had nothing to do with it. He would also leave the stage when they performed it.

Perhaps the Tubes turned it into "a steaming pile of feces" (that certainly would be within the realm of their ostensible "talents"), but Major Lance's original is a wonderful record.

The genius of Eugene Record is far too often overlooked. I'm not a big "Have You Seen Her?" fan, but "Oh Girl," "We Are Neighbors" -- DAMN the Chi-Lites kicked ass!
