Hey, progmom, how come Don Ellis doesn't get his props?!
in all the jazz threads here, and on your show (which admittedly I only get to hear about every three weeks), I've never heard mention of Don Ellis.

A friend of mine turned me on to him in 2002, and I'm forever listening to Live In 3 2/3 4 Time.

1. you know, you're right
I guess I'm most familiar with his more fusion-y stuff, which generally isn't my bag as much....

But if you like, I will give him another chance.

2. The only thing I know of him is this album
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 12:13 AM by Rabrrrrrr
My friend bought it, and I copied it. But I have no other, so my entire experience with this man is one concert.

:-)

But it's HOT! (and I don't mean "hot jazz" hot, since I know the term "hot" is a technical term that I don't know what it means, i just mean it's really amazingly good)

3. Don Ellis, Jazz Genius
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 12:16 AM by rwenos
I first heard Electric Bath in 1968, and became an instant fan. I probably heard Don's band play a dozen times, between 1968 and 1976. I dearly wish "Live at Fillmore" would be released on CD, but if you want to hear the most astounding jazz trumpet cadenza ever recorded, listen to "Concerto for Trumpet," on the "Live at Monterey" album recorded in 1967 at the Monterey Jazz Festival. (By the way, I love Miles, Diz and Louis, and Arturo Sandoval; this is just my opinion.)

Sadly, Don died of a heart attack at about the age of 45. A jazz original, lost. Very sad.
