A Rant: Idiot car driver's
Why during rush hour, when you want to change lanes, do the people in the other lane speed up in order to not let you change lanes? Why do people drive through the middle of the parking lot to find a parking space instead of the edges as required by law. Or if they are in the left hand lane all of sudden want to park on the right side of street?

Why? WHy? Why?

2. Why do you
rush to the head of the turn lane to get ahead of traffic and then hope someone will let you over so you can go straight?

(Okay, maybe not you, but there are a lot of jerkos in my city who think the turn lanes are passing lanes.)

It is the same reason, people aren't careful.

4. interstate magnestism
I have a 65 miles commute to work, and one of my quesitons is why is it when you have the cruise set, you are gaining on a car, you signal, go into the passing lane, and then, by some sort of geometric gravitational phenominom, when their front bumper gets even with your back door, they are going the same speed as you?

8. A peripheral vision thing ...
The driver in front never bothers using the driving mirror but
notices you when you move across the field of view of their wing/door mirror?

Maybe it's just low speed slipstreaming? :-)

11. Because it teaches us patience...
I'm kidding. People drive much too slow here. I see people in Jaguar's or Turbo engines driving 5 miles or more under the speed limit. It drives me nuts! What a colassal waste of horsepower. Then I see SUV's and 4-wheel-drives slow down to under 5 mph to navigate a measly speed hump my sedan can smoothly pass over at close to normal speed. Then there are the people on cell phones. Oh...my...god. I just want to throw them the finger (but don't).

18. Make it a game
Thinking that there are real people in the other cars is your first mistake :-).

I drive like I am playing a video game. Think ahead! Play like the whole traffic thing is a game and you must get through as safely as possible.

Using past experience, size up who is driving what and your observation of them while you drive. I often amaze passengers when I make predictions about how a driver near me is going to make a certain maneuver and it comes to be.

Play the game. Don't make it getting to point "B" as fast as possible. Make it through the game with a high score.

20. It's news to me that
the law requires people to look for parking spaces around the edges of a lot instead of in the middle.

Wouldn't the middle then always be empty? Personally, I always try to find a place close to where I want to be, then start looking farther out. Sometimes I'm lucky, sometimes I'm not.

21. Cruise Control Law*
Edited on Wed Oct-29-03 10:35 AM by trof
CCL* is a little known provision of Federal Interstate Traffic Code (FITC-pronounced "FITS").

1. Once you set a speed on your cruise control it is a violation of CCL to alter your speed in any way until you are actually EXITING the Interstate Highway System.

2. If you are in the right lane and have a 1 mph closure rate on the vehicle in front of you, proceed to the left lane to prepare for the "passing maneuver".

3. DO NOT use your turn signal to warn vehicle operators to your rear of the lane change maneuver. This maneuver should be accomplished as rapidly as possible.

4. If you should notice a vehicle rapidly becoming larger in your rearview mirror, DO NOT increase your speed. SPEED KILLS!

5. Proceed with the passing maneuver no matter how long it takes and DO NOT give up your position in the passing lane FOR ANY REASON. You pay your taxes just like everyone else and have a God given constitutional right to be there.

6. Should the vehicle you are attempting to pass increase speed, DO NOT move back into the right hand lane. He will probably just slow down again and besides, see line 2, par. 5 above.

Edited on Wed Oct-29-03 11:54 AM by unidentifiedbassplay
Why during rush hour, when you want to change lanes, do the people in the other lane speed up in order to not let you change lanes?

Sometimes they think it's easier to speed up and clear the way than for you to get in front of them and slow down. It happens.

Why do people drive through the middle of the parking lot to find a parking space instead of the edges as required by law.

CAFE increases when you do that.

Or if they are in the left hand lane all of sudden want to park on the right side of street?

On Pennsylvania Avenue in DC and in some neighborhooods of Philly, it's usually beacuse all the spaces in the median are taken.

on edit: typoes. My typist: "(CRACK) AAAAA!!!!!"

30. Speaking as a bicyclist...
May I take this opportunity to remind some of you that were are NOT mobile 'speed bumps'... to look BOTH ways before you pull out into an intersection in front of me, when I have the right of way... that you are NOT helping/being 'nice' by 'hanging back' 20 feet behind me for 15 blocks... that my extending my left arm straight out means I'm turning LEFT, NOT drying nail polish... that making a 90-degree upward sign with my left arm means I'm turning right, not waving at some one... etc., etc., etc... :P
