Retro Geek Post... Favorite Atari Games and why....

I was just thinking of some of the old Atari games I used to play and it's amazing how vividly I can remember most of them. I have a certain fondness of even the most cheesy ones (like promotional games... i.e. The Kool-Aid Man game and the Tooth Protectors game from Johnson and Johnson that I got from my dentist).

But cutting it down to ten this was the best list I could come up with.

1. Pitfall
the very first big time adventure game.

2. Space Invaders
sure it's repetitive but aren't all Atari games?

3. Seaquest
Being in a submarine, shooting other subs and sharks and saving divers is fun.

4. Ice Hockey
Best played two player but the computer is a fun challenge.

5. Donkey Kong
The Atari version of the game is quite poor in comparison to the arcade game, but for those of us who dumped a load of quarters into the arcade version, this was passable enough to save us our allowance.

6. Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Lost Ark
There's so much to do in this game.... it's ahead of it's time considering the lack of depth in Atari games.

7. M-Network Baseball
Two Player mandatory but the first game that felt like an actual baseball game.

8. Breakout
This game is addicting and if you find a PC version of the game even now it's extremely fun to play.

9. Q-Bert
Believe it or not this game is fricken hard... still...

10. M-Network Football
Again the closest representation of the sport out there at the time, but the two players mandatory thing was a killer.

Not mentioned, not forgotten:
-Asteroids
-Pole Position
-Basketball (I like the stick figures and square ball... Sue me!)
-E.T. (okay so I liked it)
-Pac-Man (yeah yeah, not the arcade version, but what game was on 2600?)
-Yar's Revenge
-Star Wars

1. We only had a couple...

The only one I remember was spelling bee...

Because it would say, please spell "Koonfus-eye-on"... and you're going :wtf: and it's "Time's Up!" "Koonfus-eye-on, C-o-n-f-u --" "Oh! I get it! Confusion!" :rofl:

2. I really liked the Activision games

River Raid and Pitfall were my faves.

ET and Pac-Man don't deserve honorable mention IMO. They were both pure crap.

3. That's why it was my list..

and I asked for everyone else's...

River Raid was on my mind as I was writing that actually.

ET was something different which is probably why I like it. Especially since most of the games for the 2600 were just repetitive point accumulations.

Pac-Man, again, not the best arcade to console conversion ever but just as I stated with Donkey Kong, I was tired of burning my allowance up and so I learned to live with and become addicted to the home cart version of Pac Man Fever. :)

5. I think I hated Pac Man solely based on the sound

It was so annoying! It sounded like someone flicking an electronic spring. I was really mad for spending hard earned lawn mowing money on that game.

Ms. Pac Man was better..

They did a much better job of the sound on Mrs. Pac-Man than the original for the 2600.

7. True story...

I bought an Atari 2600 and about 20 games at a garage sale for $5. This was in 1995 or so. I still have it, and it works.

My boyfriend is moving this week. When cleaning out his apartment storage locker, he came across a box....with an Atari 2600 and about 40 games. And, get this -- none of them were duplicates of mine.

So, between the two of us, we have two Atari 2600s and 60 games.

Oh, my favorites were Burger Time, Frogger (I have those), and Pitfall (I don't have that....but he does).

I never had an Atari either, which is why, when I saw one at a garage sale, I bought it.

8. I loved "Pitfall". I never learned to play it, but.........

my little brother played for hours at a time and it was addictive!

A few years ago, I got the Sega or Nintendo version of Pitfall in the hopes that my kids would get hooked - but they weren't interested!

12. Genesis/SNES versions weren't the same

and by that point the depth of games had exploded to where running through the same screens over and over for points only was too boring for most game players.
