Musical suggestions needed for new protest video — Please help!
I will admit a gaping hole in my knowledge base when it comes to music. I want to do a new video based on the pics I shot in DC. You can view them here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=606239&mesg_id=606239

What do you think would work? I really need some input. If I had several to check out, I'll know it when I see it. Thanks!

LWolf offered these suggestions:
What's the message?
Is it one of anger? One of determination? A few that come to mind:
We Know War by John McCutcheon
http://www.folkmusic.com/f_mp3.htm

Shadow Government by Hugh Blumenfeld:
http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/2448/2448205.html

Dylan: the times they are a changin'; masters of war
People got to be free (I can't remember who sings this one)
Paula Cole: You're my hero, Mr. President.
To Washington: John Mellencamp
This land is your land...

And then there's this one, which seems to sum up the Bush administration pretty well:
And the sign says "long hair freaky people need not apply"
So I put my hair under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said you look like a fine outstanding young man I think you'll do
So I took off my hat I said "Imagine that Huh Me working for you"

Signs Signs
Everywhere there's signs
Blocking up the scenery
Breaking my mind
Do this, don't do that
Can't you read the sign

And the sign says "Anybody caught trespassing will be shot on sight"
So I jumped the fence and I yelled at the house, Hey! What gives you the right
To put up a fence And keep me out Or to keep Mother Nature in
If God was here He'd tell it to your face Man You're some kind of sinner

1. My suggestion....
What a wonderful world - by Louis Armstrong.

Go with an upbeat, inspiring, message instead of falling into the trap of a the 70's anti-war anthems ... Just a thought

3. Pete Seeger - Waist deep in the big muddy
It was back in nineteen forty-two,
I was a member of a good platoon.
We were on maneuvers in-a Loozianna,
One night by the light of the moon.
The captain told us to ford a river,
That's how it all begun.
We were -- knee deep in the Big Muddy,
But the big fool said to push on.

The Sergeant said, "Sir, are you sure,
This is the best way back to the base?"
"Sergeant, go on! I forded this river
'Bout a mile above this place.
It'll be a little soggy but just keep slogging.
We'll soon be on dry ground."
We were -- waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool said to push on.

The Sergeant said, "Sir, with all this equipment
No man will be able to swim."
"Sergeant, don't be a Nervous Nellie,"
The Captain said to him.
"All we need is a little determination;
Men, follow me, I'll lead on."
We were -- neck deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool said to push on.

All at once, the moon clouded over,
We heard a gurgling cry.
A few seconds later, the captain's helmet
Was all that floated by.
The Sergeant said, "Turn around men!
I'm in charge from now on."
And we just made it out of the Big Muddy
With the captain dead and gone.

We stripped and dived and found his body
Stuck in the old quicksand.
I guess he didn't know that the water was deeper
Than the place he'd once before been.
Another stream had joined the Big Muddy
'Bout a half mile from where we'd gone.
We were lucky to escape from the Big Muddy
When the big fool said to push on.

Well, I'm not going to point any moral;
I'll leave that for yourself
Maybe you're still walking, you're still talking
You'd like to keep your health.
But every time I read the papers
That old feeling comes on;
We're -- waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool says to push on.

36. Did you catch Fresh Air today?
Arlo Guthrie was on talking about his new record. Terry played two blatantly anti-war folk songs. It was great.

5. Phil Ochs - We're the cops of the world
Come, get out of the way, boys
Quick, get out of the way
You'd better watch what you say, boys
Better watch what you say

We've rammed in your harbor and tied to your port
And our pistols are hungry and our tempers are short
So bring your daughters around to the port

'Cause we're the Cops of the World, boys
We're the Cops of the World

We pick and choose as we please, boys
Pick and choose as please

You'd best get down on your knees, boys
Best get down on your knees

We're hairy and horny and ready to shack
We don't care if you're yellow or black

Just take off your clothes and lie down on your back

'Cause we're the Cops of the World, boys
We're the Cops of the World

Our boots are needing a shine, boys
Boots are needing a shine

But our Coca-cola is fine, boys
Coca-cola is fine

We've got to protect all our citizens fair
So we'll send a battalion for everyone there
And maybe we'll leave in a couple of years

'Cause we're the Cops of the World, boys
We're the Cops of the World

Dump the reds in a pile, boys
Dump the reds in a pile

You'd better wipe of that smile, boys
Better wipe off that smile

We'll spit through the streets of the cities we wreck
We'll find you a leader that you can't elect
Those treaties we signed were a pain in the neck

'Cause we're the Cops of the World, boys
We're the Cops of the World

Clean the johns with a rag, boys
Clean the johns with a rag

If you like you can use your flag, boys
If you like you can use your flag

We've got too much money we're looking for toys
And guns will be guns and boys will be boys

But we'll gladly pay for all we destroy
'Cause we're the Cops of the World, boys
We're the Cops of the World

Please stay off of the grass, boys
Please stay off of the grass

Here's a kick in the ass, boys
Here's a kick in the ass

We'll smash down your doors, we don't bother to knock
We've done it before, so why all the shock?
We're the biggest and toughest kids on the block
'
Cause we're the Cops of the World, boys
We're the Cops of the World

When we butchered your son, boys
When we butchered your son

Have a stick of our gum, boys
Have a stick of our bubble-gum

We own half the world, oh say can you see
The name for our profits is democracy
So, like it or not, you will have to be free

'Cause we're the Cops of the World, boys
We're the Cops of the World

6. "2 + 2 = 5" by Radiohead from the album "Hail to the Thief"
The song is about the current political climate in the World, but takes aim at the Bush administration. The song also begs people to become more involved in what's going on.

"are you such a dreamer
to put the world to rights
i'll stay home forever
where two and two always makes a five

i'll lay down the tracks
sandbag and hide
january has april showers
and two and two always makes a five

it's the devil's way now
there is no way out
you can scream and you can shout
it is too late now
because you're not there
payin' attention

i try to sing along
but the music's all wrong

oh hail to the thief
oh hail to the thief

don't question my authority or put me in the box

oh go up to the king, and the sky is falling in
but its not
but its not
maybe not
maybe not"

13. Or "2 + 2 = ?" by the Bob Seger System...
Yes it's true I am a young man,
But I'm old enough to kill.
I don't wanna kill nobody,
But I must if you so will.
And if I raise my hand in question,
You just say that I'm a fool.
'cause I got the gall to ask you
Can you maybe change the rule?
And you stand and call me upstart
Ask what answer can I find,
I ain't sayin' I'm a genius,
2 plus 2 is on my mind.
2 plus 2 is on my mind.

Well I knew a guy in high school,
Just an average friendly guy,
And he had himself a girlfriend,
And you made them say goodbye.
Now he's buried in the mud
In a foreign jungle land,
And his girl just sits and cries,
She just doesn't understand.
So you say he died for freedom,
What if he died to save your lies?
Go ahead and call me yellow.
2 plus 2 is on my mind.
2 plus 2 is on my mind.

All I know is that I'm young,
And your rules they are old,
If I've got to kill to live,
Then there's something left untold.
I'm no statesman I'm no general,
I'm no kid I'll never be.
It's the rules not the soldier
That I find the real enemy.
I'm no prophet I'm no rebel,
I'm just asking you why.
I just want a simple answer,
Why it is I've got to die
I'm the simple minded kind,
2 plus 2 is on my mind.

7. The Missionary - Jimmy Buffett
I didn't know we were at war
I've been away so long
Trying to help once lost men
Distinguish right from wrong

I didn't know we killed the men
Our leaders proud and strong
The situation's changed my friend
I've been away too long

I taught my friends how we had gained
Respect for every man
And freedom flowed like jungle streams
While peace embraced the land

I told them how we'd learned to change
Our sword blades into plows
I told them they should learn from us
What should I tell them now?

The jungle silence shut them off
From "civilized" mankind
Their nakedness was no disgrace
No censors could I find

The population lived in peace
All brothers on their own
And now that I have seen the mess
I don't think I'll go home

Cause I didn't know we were at war
I've been away so long
I told them they should learn from us
I think I told them wrong

8. With My Own Two Hands by Ben Harper...
Edited on Wed Oct-29-03 11:12 AM by liberalmuse
A very positive, hopeful song.

On edit: Lyrics-

I can change the world
With my own two hands
Make a better place
With my own two hands
Make a kinder place
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
I can make peace on earth
With my own two hands
I can clean up the earth
With my own two hands
I can reach out to you
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
I'm gonna make it a brighter place
I'm gonna make it a safer place
I'm gonna help the human race
With my own
With my own two hands
I can hold you
With my own two hands
I can comfort you
With my own two hands
But you got to use
Use your own two hands
Use your own
Use your own two hands
With our own
With our own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands

10. The Internationale (It's time to get SERIOUS)
Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We'll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.

No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we'll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They'll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We'll shoot the generals on our own side.

No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E'er the thieves will out with their booty
And give to all a happier lot.
Each at the forge must do their duty
And we'll strike while the iron is hot.

11. warning, Class warfare song
The Banks are Made of Marble
A Song by Les Rice
I've traveled round this country
From shore to shining shore
It really made me wonder
The things I heard and saw. I saw the weary farmer
Plowing sod and loam
l heard the auction hammer
A knocking down his home

But the banks are made of marble
With a guard at every door
And the vaults are stuffed with silver
That the farmer sweated for

l saw the seaman standing
Idly by the shore
l heard the bosses saying
Got no work for you no more

But the banks are made of marble
With a guard at every door
And the vaults are stuffed with silver
That the seaman sweated for

I saw the weary miner
Scrubbing coal dust from his back
I heard his children cryin
Got no coal to heat the shack

But the banks are made of marble
With a guard at every door
And the vaults are stuffed with silver
That the miner sweated for

I've seen my brothers working
Throughout this mighty land
l prayed we'd get together
And together make a stand

Final Chorus
Then we'd own those banks of marble
With a guard at every door
And we'd share those vaults of silver
That we have sweated for

15. Couple of thoughts
First, I love the Dire Straits suggestion. Brothers in Arms works for a lot of reasons.

Loudon Wainwright III "Bad Man". He's done a couple of versions. Written in 1991, he reprised it for Afghanistan.
http://www.mit.edu/people/ecmellen/Vietnam/bad_man.html

Austin Lounge Lizards "Why Couldn't We Blow up Saddam" is hilarious. Off their "Strange Noises in the Dark" CD. Here's a link to the song, at the bottom of the list. http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=1472425

Guns n Roses "Civil War" works, especially a few lines, like "We feed the rich while we bury the poor." Also, if you are looking for soundbites, the undertoned line "What's so civil about war, anyway," sounds great.

16. Some more suggestions
Great slide show, really enjoyed your pix!
Some suggestions:
Marvin Gay - What's Going On, and Mercy Mercy Me
John Lennon - Give peace a chance
Pink Floyd - The Fletcher Memorial Home (off The Final Cut)
"Take all your overgrown infants away
And build them a home
A little place of their own
The Fletcher Memorial Home for Incurable Tyrants and kings
And they can appear to themselves every day
On closed circuit TV
To make sure they're still real
It's the only connection they feel
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Reagan and Haig
Mr. Begin and friend, Mrs. Thatcher, The Paisley
Mr. Brezhnev and party
The Ghost of McCarthy
The memories of Nixon
And now, adding color, a group of anonymous
Latin American meat-packing glitterati

Did they expect us to treat them with any respect??
They can polish their medals and sharpen their smiles
And amuse themselves playing games for awhile
Boom boom, bang bang, lie down, you're dead...
Safe in the permanent gaze of a cold glass eye
With their favorite toys
They'll be good girls and boys
At the Fletcher Memorial Home for
Colonial Wasters of Life and Limb
Is everyone in?
Are you having a nice time?
Now the final solution can be applied..."

18. One more
Climax Blues Band "Rich Man" might be good

Oh I am a rich man
And I drive a Cadillac
I buy everything I want
I sell bullets to the soldiers

Oh I am a poor man
I don't drive a Cadillac
Can't buy anything I want
They want me to be a soldier

Oh I am a rich man's son
I don't need a Cadillac
I was standing watching soldiers
I was murdered by ricochet

20. "Probably Will" by Concrete Blonde, prolesunited. That's the ticket.
It's a guitar-driven folksy kind of tune with a barely concealed underlayer of rage. Great final verse!

And they will only make us stronger
If they should try to keep us still
And we can rise and take it all someday
And we probably will

You know, we probably will

The interlude, with James Mankey's incomparable guitar and some cool clip-clopping horse's hooves, is just sensational!

24. Lost Together by blue rodeo
lost together lyrics by blue rodeo
Strange and beautiful
Are the stars tonight
That dance around your head
In your eyes I see that perfect world
I hope that doesn't sound too weird

And I want all the world to know
That your love's all I need
All that I need
And if we're lost
Then we are lost together
Yea if we're lost
Then we are lost together

I stand before this faceless crowd
And I wonder why I bother
So much controlled by so few
Stumbling from one disaster to another

I've heard it all so many times before
It's all a dream to me now
A dream to me now
And if we're lost
Then we are lost together
Yea if we're lost
Then we are lost together

In the silence of this whispered night
I listen only to your breath
And that second of a shooting star
Somehow it all makes sense

And I want all the world to know
That your love's all I need
All that I need
And if we're lost
Then we are lost together
Yea if we're lost
Then we are lost together

25. Buffalo Springfield For What It's Worth
Buffalo Springfield

For What It's Worth
Stephen Stills, 1966

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side

It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

28. "Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire and
another cute song.....

Sing it to the tune of "If you're happy and you know it"

If you cannot find Osama, bomb Iraq. If the markets are a drama, bomb Iraq. If the terrorists are frisky, Pakistanis looking shifty, North Korea is too risky, Bomb Iraq.

If we have no allies with us, bomb Iraq. If we think someone has dissed us, bomb Iraq. So to hell with the inspections, Let's look tough for the elections, CLOSE your mind and take directions, Bomb Iraq.

It's """pre-emptive non-aggression""", bomb Iraq. Let's prevent this mass destruction, bomb Iraq. They've got weapons we can't see, And that's good enough for me 'Cos it's all the proof I need Bomb Iraq.

If YOU NEVER WERE ELECTED, bomb Iraq. If your mood is quite dejected, bomb Iraq. If you think Saddam's gone mad, With the weapons that he had, (And he tried to kill your dad), Bomb Iraq.

If your corporate fraud is growin', bomb Iraq. If your ties to it are showin', bomb Iraq. If your politics are sleezy, And hiding that ain't easy, And your manhood's getting queasy, Bomb Iraq.

Fall in line and follow orders, bomb Iraq. For our might knows not our borders, bomb Iraq. Disagree? We'll call it treason, let's make war, not love this season, even if we have no reason, Bomb Iraq.

Eve of Destruction........

The Eastern World
It is explodin'
Violence flarin'
Bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill
But not for votin'
You don't believe in war
But what's that gun you're totin'
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin'

But you tell me over, and over, and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say
And can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today
If the button is pushed, there's no runnin' away
There'll be no one to save
With the whole world in a grave
Take a look around you boy,
It's bound to scare you boy

And you tell me over, and over, and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Yeah, my blood's so mad
Feels like coagulatin'
I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth
It knows no regulation
Handful of senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world
Is just too frustratin'

And you tell me over, and over, and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

And think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
Ah you may leave here for four days in space
But when you return it's the same old place
The poundin' of the drums
The pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace
Hate your next door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace

But you tell me over, and over, and over, and over again my friend
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
No, no, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

33. Funny you should mention them
I was listening to Rage Against the Machine when I was cycling today and this one really struck me. It's raw and angry, but it kind of fits my mood.

Township Rebellion
Rebel, rebel and yell
'Cause our people still dwell in hell
Locked in a cell
Mad is the story I tell
How long can we wait
Come on, seein'what's at stake
Action for reaction
If your mind's in a somewhat complacent state
Get a check - up
This is a stick - up
Our freedom or our life
I wish I could be peaceful
But there can be no sequel

Chorus:
Now freedom must be fundamental
In Johannesburg or South Central
On the mic, 'cause someoneshould tell 'em
To kick in the township rebellion

Yea, so you thought you could get with the hardlines
That fill your mind
The thoughts, battles fought
And lessons taught
And I'll display the fitness
And flip like a gymnast
Raise my fist and resist
Asleep, though we stand in the midst
Of the war
Gotta get mine
Gotta get more
Keepin' the mic warm against the norm
'Cause what does it offer me
I think often it's nothin' but a coffin

Gotta get wreck
'Til our necks never swing on a rope
From here to the cape of no hope

Chorus

Why stand
On a silent platform
Fight the war
Fuck the norm

32. Jackson Browne "Lives in the Balance"
I've been waiting for something to happen
For a week or a month or a year
With the blood in the ink of the headlines
And the sound of the crowd in my ear
You might ask what it takes to remember
When you know that you've seen it before
Where a government lies to a people
And a country is drifting to war

And there's a shadow on the faces
Of the men who send the guns
To the wars that are fought in places
Where their business interest runs

On the radio talk shows and the T.V.
You hear one thing again and again
How the U.S.A. stands for freedom
And we come to the aid of a friend
But who are the ones that we call our friends--
These governments killing their own?
Or the people who finally can't take any more
And they pick up a gun or a brick or a stone
There are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

There's a shadow on the faces
Of the men who fan the flames
Of the wars that are fought in places
Where we can't even say the names

They sell us the President the same way
They sell us our clothes and our cars
They sell us every thing from youth to religion
The same time they sell us our wars
I want to know who the men in the shadows are
I want to hear somebody asking them why
They can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are
But they're never the ones to fight or to die
And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire
